I agree with tariffs as a sensible way to counter what countries might be doing to us. Yes, I agree with Trump on that macro idea. I disagree with the micro approach, i.e., how he went about it. A sensible (and legal) way would have been to explain to the American people what was going on, then publicly ask the countries to stop tariffing us, and then go to Congress as a last resort to deploy tariffs on countries that didn’t play ball. I admit I’m playing Monday morning quarterback, but I would not be mad at the next POTUS taking this approach.
