You can clearly see the ridges (keel) running along the vertebral scutes on the top of the carapace (upper shell) and the distinct contour lines across the skin like topography on a map. They often have serrated marginal scutes (around the rear outer edges of the shell).

These animals need large pools to swim and move freely. They need a basking area and substrate, appropriate lighting, heating and filtration. If kept outside they need secure fencing to stop them from escaping. They live more 40 years, a huge commitment for a pet owner. #think
