Revised edition of Can I Pay With This? A stablecoin experiment in Buenos Aires. Updated chapters + new epilogue. Free download (Github/IPFS/Bookfunnel): twelvemeatballs.com/confession/new… A short and snarky forty-minute read about money, trust, and an unhealthy number of stablecoin apps.

We tried paying for ice cream with stablecoins in BA and Shop said: “No thanks, pesos only.” Today was the 11th weekly Stablecoin Ice Cream Meetup (every Thu 5pm). 12 people showed up, pretty cool tbh. Picked a shop from @kripton_la map. But we were told “Owner stopped accepting it. Pesos please.” Classic move.

TODAY 2pmET on the Doots, we’re joined by @mvmurthy , from @karmahq_ : how funding actually moves through ecosystems, not just how it’s announced on X. @karmahq_ sits at the intersection of grants, capital, and coordination: how projects get discovered, how support compounds over time, and how ecosystems grow without everything turning into a zero-sum game. dailydoots.com

> Sounds a lil bit anti-islam but hey Fuck statements like this. Similarly, fuck claiming that standing up for Gazans', West Bankers, Lebanese, Syrian people's right to live in peace and not get encroaching settlements, constant drone strikes and bombs is antisemitic. And fuck claiming that standing up for Ukrainian people's right to live in peace and not be invaded is Russophobic. And fuck not even noticing the needless and extreme manmade suffering in Sudan, Myanmar, North Korea and elsewhere. And fuck the possibility that in the future statements like this will have to include a line for Greenland. We stand for human dignity. That is the bottom line. You can disagree on details of individual situations and what specific actions hurt or help, but the bottom line in resolving such issues must be a common agreement that the underlying goal is to protect the dignity of all people. This is more important than political teams. There are also people who are on the same political team as you, but whose words and actions clearly demonstrate that they are not interested in human dignity - genuine *phobes who use appeals to freedom and life opportunistically. This must also be opposed. Again, the north star is human dignity. To be ultimately more interested not in pushing the people you oppose down, but in lifting the people you feel sympathy for up. If you observe the long-term pattern of how someone acts, you can tell.

Payment UX in Australia is totally broken. Something that caught my attention in my first week in Australia, beyond koalas being picky eaters (just like my kids) and kangaroos walking with their tail, is the freaking nonsense of card payment surcharges. Everywhere you go, there’s a clear sign: SURCHARGE. Merchants are passing the interchange fee back to the consumer, and it feels like getting penalized for choosing a convenient method. And it’s not even clear how much surcharge, you need to ask, and most of the times the cashier guy has no idea. It could be 1.5%, or 1.9% or 2.2% fee. To be fair, I get where this comes from. Merchants are pushing back against card network fees and acquiring/issuing bank costs. But the way it’s implemented feels… off. Instead of incentivizing cash, merchants are penalizing card users. And consumers seem to accept it, and normalize it, that’s even worse. From my Argentine perspective, this feels backwards. If you want people to use cash, shouldn’t you discount cash payments instead of adding friction to card usage?

@AriEiberman @cemarcann I have not seen this in Eurooe for years, but currently in the US with 3% surcharge on "credit cards" all over. All of my non-US debit cards are treated as credit cards.

Dawn breaking over pecan trees makes a good moment for self-reflection. Pondering what I want to be when I grow up.
