After some research, it turns out the blue-and-white "Mongol Empire Flag" is a work of fiction The Mongol Empire only used colored flags (left) for military units and horse-haired trident banners (right) for representing the Great Khan's authority




There is currently a debate in Mongolia over changing the flag from it's current form to the flag of the Mongol Empire (pictured below) The two main points of dispute are over political symbolism and the aesthetic design Those for change say that the current flag is Soviet-derived, whilst those against change say the new flag does not include Mongolia's current national symbol, the Soyombo In addition, there is also an argument that Mongolia's flag should reflect it's current status as an independent nation-state. The importance of the Soyombo as an independence symbol means that it should be retained, even if the current flag is changed
