I wouldn't say it always makes the movie better (especially when it comes with heckling), but many of the films that have stuck with me the most the last few years have been with small crowds that can best be described as antagonistic.

I've always been put off by the kind of pop-coercive advocacy of movies (in theatres) and the performing arts that Steven Spielberg puts forth—"at the end of a really good movie experience, we are all united"; some of my best movie experiences, much or most of the audience hated.
