Statements from accounts like these have a significant misunderstanding of why March Madness is so unique, special, memorable, and fun for fans. It’s never been the “best” 68 teams in the field, it’s the 68 most deserving teams, many of which are smaller conference winners. Teams that would never be given a chance if auto-bids didn’t exist. If they had their way, we would never see another Saint Peter’s 2022 Elite Eight run or another Florida Gulf Coast “Dunk City” 2013 Sweet 16 run. Seeing these smaller schools that on paper stand no chance (and get shafted by how at-large bids are determined anyways) get a chance to shock the world and beat a huge program is one of the most fun parts of the tournament every single year.
