Jesus lived under the shadow of a mighty empire, where the Romans crushed the oppressed, and local leaders, clothed in the garments of faith, betrayed their own people for power. Yet, in the midst of this injustice, He rose with a message that shook the very foundations of that empire—a message of love, liberation, and justice. Today, we see the echoes of that same struggle. The United States, like Rome, wields its power, propping up Israel’s systems of oppression, while Palestinians cry out for freedom under an apartheid regime justified by might, not right. But just as Jesus challenged empire and complicity, we too must stand for the oppressed. The arc of the moral universe bends toward justice, but it will not bend unless we, with courage and conviction, help it along. It is hypocrisy or ignorance to speak of having faith, any faith, and then not to stand up for Palestinian dignity. Where there is injustice, let us rise.
