Today, we mark 40 years since the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster. The explosion at the fourth reactor changed the lives of millions of Ukrainians. Its consequences affected the entire world and are still felt today. These photos show exhibits from the collection of the Museum of the History of Ukrainian Governments at the Cabinet of Ministers, which tell the story of Chornobyl. Among them is the working notebook of Oleksandr Liashko, who headed the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR in 1986. It records the steps taken by the Ukrainian government in the first hours after the accident at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, as well as evidence of the central Soviet authorities’ delays in authorizing evacuation and informing people about the danger. Even today, Russia continues the same pattern of behavior – that of a totalitarian regime. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022, the Russian army occupied the territory of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Even the station’s guards remain in Russian captivity to this day. In February 2025, a Russian drone damaged the New Safe Confinement over the fourth reactor. Russia's disregard for globally accepted principles of nuclear safety now also extends to other areas of Ukraine. In the south, Russians continue to occupy Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which has been militarized, with overwhelming safety violations now commonplace. The events in Chornobyl did not remain in 1986. Even today, it is a constant reminder of the real threat that totalitarian regimes pose to the world’s energy security. Eternal memory to the liquidators and to all those who lost their lives as a result of the disaster.

Most of the Defenders returning today were held in Chechnya. A lot of them were born in the 2000s. Injured Warriors returned, too. Among the released Defenders are paratroopers, soldiers of the Naval and Territorial Defense Forces, the National Guard of Ukraine, the National Police, the State Border Guard Service, and the State Transport Special Service. The youngest released Defender is 24 years old. He was taken prisoner in the Donetsk region in 2023.
