This is the critical shortage Dr. Fred Maiso FCS @cosecsa , general surgery fellow @mbalerrh & @UCSF_CHESA Fellow highlighted in his presentation on up-skilling Medical Officers. With only 25% of the population able to access surgical services, the gap in care is a national challenge. The Solution: Dr. Maiso explored "Up-skilling" as a temporal yet vital solution to meet community needs. By providing a structured 3-day surgical skills training, the program focused on the essentials: basic surgical techniques and theatre protocols. The Results: 📈 Confidence: Significant improvement in surgical skills post-training. 📈 Inspiration: 75% of participants expressed a new interest in pursuing surgery as a postgraduate specialty! Meet CHESA Fellow Dr. Oti Nimi Aria, a plastic surgeon at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria. She is identifying the prevalence of breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgeries among women in order to shape policy and improve access.

Meet CHESA Fellow Dr. Kara Faktor, a general surgery resident at University of California at San Francisco. Her project is evaluating the impact of outreach programs to reduce pediatric gastrointestinal surgical diseases among refugee children in Uganda.
