Roughly 1/3 of all freshwater mussel species in the U.S. are at risk of extinction. To help protect them, imaging specialists are creating digital and 3D models of museum specimens to use as identification training material. Story: floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/scient…

"They can do things that you couldn’t even imagine," says Gustav Paulay about sea cucumbers. "They have a lung, but their lung is not through their mouth but through their anus. So they actually breathe through their butt." Watch with @UFExplore: floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/sea-cu…

A study led by @DecimaLab out of @niwa_nz highlights the impact salp’s fast sinking fecal pellets can have on carbon export. When salps are present the biological carbon pump is more efficient, sequestering atmospheric carbon to the ocean! #RVTangaroa nature.com/articles/s4146…

Crustaceans in the family Phronimidae found a bizarre way to ascend from their ancestor's benthic niche & live a pelagic lifestyle. Phronimids prey on filter-feeding gelatinous zooplankton, hollow out their bodies, & use their bodies for protection, buoyancy, & reproduction.🦐

“They all look the same, until you compare their gonopods, which are structurally complex and very species specific,” said Robert Lasley. Gonopods are used for reproduction, and in some crabs, they’re adorned with frills, spikes and streamers. #Crabs 🦀 floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/scient…

Chlorodielline crabs, most of which grow no larger than a corn kernel, look so similar that scientists have struggled to distinguish species in the group based solely on appearance. A new study took a closer look to understand crab diversity. Much closer. floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/scient…

Did you know these mesmerizing creatures aren't jellyfish? They're colonial animals made up of individual specialized organisms, known as zooids, that work together as a unit. floridamuseum.ufl.edu/science/five-f…
