UIowa Genetics Graduate Program

We had a great time at the University of Iowa's Genetics Retreat! Special thanks to our fantastic keynote speaker, @DrDanielleDick of the Rutgers Addiction Research Center and author of "The Child Code."

Congrats to Lucas Pietan for defending his PhD thesis titled "Machine Learning Strategies for Discovering Genetic Patterns in Complex and Rare Conditions". Lucas was co-mentored by Dr. Thomas Casavant (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Dr. Benjamin Darbro (Pediatrics).

Nathan Mohar (Wallrath Lab) was awarded 1st Place Poster at the 2024 Annual Pharmacological Sciences Research Retreat. The title of this poster was "SMAD7 is a modifier gene of LMNA-associated muscular dystrophy and implicates the SMAD pathway as a therapeutic target".

Congratulations to Dr. Kristen Rohli for successfully defending her PhD! Her thesis is "Metabolic regulation of ER redox homeostasis maintains insulin granule formation in pancreatic beta-cells." She identified steps in insulin production that are defective in type II diabetes.

Nathan Mohar (Wallrath Lab) gave an oral presentation titled "DNA sequence variation in SMAD7 enhances LMNA-associated skeletal muscle disease and implicates SMAD signaling as a therapeutic target" at the 2024 Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinical and Scientific Conference!

Fantastic news – UI Genetics students are receiving international recognition. Timothy Nguyen (@7imNg) (Van Otterloo Lab) has been selected as a presenter at the upcoming Craniofacial Morphogenesis and Tissue Regeneration Gordon Conference in Spain!

Congratulations to graduate student Emily Adelizzi! Emily recently earned funding form the Univ. of Iowa's T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowship. She will be visiting Max Plank Institute for Molecular Biomedicine in Munster, Germany for her research.

Congratulations to graduate student Anna Carver (@DNAnnacarver) on a new publication! Anna is a PhD student working in Dr. Hanna Stevens's lab (@PsyNeuroDevLab). Correlation of telomere length in brain tissue with peripheral tissues in living human subjects (Front Mol Neurosci).
