When you walk the streets of Jerusalem, there is no denying the power of this ancient city. For thousands of years, Jerusalem has stood at the heart of Jewish faith, culture, and history. Today, on Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day), we celebrate the reunification of Jerusalem and the return of the Jewish people to the Old City 59 years ago. It was an extraordinary moment that fulfilled generations of longing, prayer, and unwavering hope.

In the latest escalation against Jewish community life, hateful activists have launched a campaign to flood the Canada Revenue Agency with complaints about Jewish schools. The public targeting of these institutions has severe consequences on Jewish families, especially in the current climate of rising antisemitism and attacks on our community spaces. Help us send a message to Canada Revenue Agency’s leadership. Tell them that the agency must not allow its complaint process to be manipulated by those who would weaponize our institutions to target Canadians. You can take action here: actionhub.ca/alert/cra/

UJA is relieved to learn that Toronto Police Service (TPS) has made an arrest following another attack with a weapon targeting members of the Jewish community last night. One person was injured.    The Jewish Security Network (JSN), in partnership with other community security partners, received critical information about the shooting and passed the information to law enforcement, who were then able to make an arrest.
These alarming antisemitic attacks, now occurring in rapid succession, must not be allowed to continue. These escalating acts of intimidation and extremism threaten not only the Jewish community, but the safety and social fabric of our broader society. Everyone in Canada should be concerned.    As for the Jewish community, we have always persevered and will continue to do so. We are not going anywhere.    Because of our community’s vigilance in reporting specific information, police were able to trace and make this arrest.  Always report security concerns to police (911) and to the Jewish Security Network’s 24/7 Security Operations Centre at 437-222-3999.

Last night, three individuals standing outside a Toronto synagogue were shot at with a replica firearm, leaving one person with minor injuries. This marks the second such incident in a week, following three separate shootings targeting synagogues in March. This is not normal, and it cannot become normalized. Individuals were targeted outside a Jewish institution and subjected to intimidation and violence because of who they are and where they were. The cumulative impact on the Jewish community is profound. Families should not have to fear attending synagogue, gathering in community spaces, or simply standing outside Jewish institutions in Toronto. Governments, law enforcement, and civic leaders must treat these incidents with the seriousness they deserve and ensure those responsible are identified and held accountable. Anyone with information is urged to contact Toronto Police.

We are encouraged to learn that a suspect has been charged in connection with the shootings at Shaarei Shomayim in Toronto and Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto (BAYT) in Vaughan this past March. The suspect is not being named as he was 17 years old at the time of the offence.   These attacks shook the sense of safety not only for those congregations, but for Jewish communities across the region. We thank the Toronto Police Service and York Regional Police for their diligence and coordination in advancing this investigation. Their work sends a clear signal that those who target our community will be identified and held accountable.   Strong and consistent enforcement of the law is essential. The Jewish community, like all Canadians, must have confidence that acts of violence and intimidation will be met with serious consequences.    Multiple shootings targeting synagogues represent a dangerous escalation. Canada’s reputation as a safe and inclusive country depends on our collective willingness to confront this reality directly. We will continue working with partners at all levels to ensure the safety and security of Jewish institutions and to address the conditions that allow hate to take root.   As the Jewish Security Network (JSN) continues to work closely with law enforcement, we encourage community members to stay aware of their surroundings and report any concerns.

UJA has been made aware of a violent attack against members of the Jewish community involving a weapon on Thursday, April 30. While we are relieved that none of the victims were seriously injured, this reflects an escalation of antisemitic violence across the GTA. Just last week, a member of the community was physically assaulted outside a synagogue, and a Jewish-owned store was vandalized in an antisemitic incident. There can be no ambiguity about the motive. These targeted attacks are intended to threaten our community and force us to hide our identity. It won’t work. We are resilient, strong, and determined to live our Jewish lives freely and openly. Toronto Police Service (TPS) are investigating this as a suspected hate crime and are asking for the public’s help to identify the vehicle used in the attack. We have confidence police will apprehend the suspect.  Anyone with information is urged to contact police as soon as possible at (416) 808-3505 or at 222tips.com.

Joint Statement by CIJA, @UJAFederation, and @FederationCJA:  There is a coordinated campaign to erase Jewish life in Canada. And it is not only being waged through violence and intimidation. For months, a veritable witch hunt across various channels has targeted all Jewish community institutions with the goal of erasing Jewish life in this country. Today, this campaign, orchestrated by radical anti-Jewish and anti-Israel groups, has crossed a new threshold by attacking our community's schools, with a clear and blatant intent to weaponize the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). Fringe activists have filed malicious complaints targeting 11 of our schools across Canada, as well as members of our community. The goal is not transparency, but a blatant desire to paralyze and destroy Jewish community life in Canada. Targeting our schools means targeting our children, and that is unacceptable. Let’s recall the facts: since October 7, Jewish schools have faced real threats—gunshots, incendiary devices, antisemitic graffiti, and harassment. Instead of protecting children, these malicious actors prefer to put a target on their backs, using them as pawns for their vile antisemitic propaganda, which ultimately attacks the very values of our country. CIJA, supported by leading legal experts, is actively engaged with the government to counter this offensive. While there is no indication of elevated security threat, we will continue to work with Security Networks all across the country and authorities on security and safety. Targeting Jewish schools means targeting Canadian children, which is sickening and unacceptable. We trust that Canada Revenue Agency will reject this cynical attack on the integrity of schools that, every day, proudly teach Canadian values.

UJA is aware of this morning’s violent attack at the Sephardic Kehila Centre in Thornhill. An individual tried to force entry into the synagogue and assaulted a member of our community. The incident was reported to the Jewish Security Network (JSN), who ensured York Regional Police (YRP) were notified and are supporting the investigation. We are relieved our community member was not seriously injured. That does not lessen the seriousness of the attack, which reflects a continued pattern of antisemitic violence targeting our community. The Jewish community, like all Canadians, deserves to live in peace and security. As these incidents become more normalized, they erode public safety and our way of life as Canadians. This cannot be tolerated. We are grateful to YRP for their swift response and have full confidence they will do everything in their power to apprehend the suspect. Anyone with information is urged to contact York Regional Police at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7441.
