A landmark moment for maternal care. On International Day of the Midwife, Leah Hazard delivered her petition — 71,529-strong — calling for legally enforceable caps on working hours to ensure safer births and protect midwives. She was joined by Anna, midwife educator and CEO of All 4 Maternity and publisher of The Practicing Journal & The Student Midwife Journal, Saphiya, third year student midwife and founder of Fund Future Midwives and Gilliam Meldrum, Radical Midwives. Your birthplace is their workplace. #maternity #midwives

Starmer defies calls to step down. The Labour Party is splitting in real time - and the public is taking sides. Over 90 MPs want Starmer out. More than 100 are telling him to stay. Four ministers, including Safeguarding minister Jess Phillips quit yesterday. The cabinet is divided. As of Wednesday lunchtime - Starmer is refusing to go. Now petitions are emerging on Change.org that mirror the split exactly. Petition starter, Lindsay, who started a petition urging Starmer to remain, warns that his resignation could hand power to "an unelected interim leader who may not reflect the democratic will of the Labour Party's membership." Fellow petition starter, Steph, who backs Starmer as PM, says holding the line is the only thing standing between Labour — and handing Farage exactly what he wants. Petition starter, Sharaine, is calling for him to go. She says efforts to unify the party "have fallen flat, leading to internal conflicts that further hinder effective governance." 💬 Have your say. Twenty-two passengers from the hantavirus-affected cruise ship MV Hondius are set to be discharged from the Merseyside hospital where they have been isolating. Ten more people will arrive in the UK for quarantine. Those discharged will move to dedicated flats, where specialists will assess whether they can complete the remainder of their 45-day self-isolation period at home. The WHO has said there is "no sign" of a wider hantavirus outbreak, but Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned "the situation could change" and that further confirmed cases are possible. Two British nationals — currently being treated in the Netherlands and South Africa — have tested positive. The response has already prompted public concern, with one petition calling for British passengers aboard not to be permitted to return to the UK until a full eight-week quarantine period had been completed. "We need to take this seriously because in many ways this is more lethal than Covid — that is, it's more pathogenic — but it doesn't have the capacity to transmit anywhere near Sars-CoV-2," global health law expert Professor Lawrence Gostin told Sky News.

Many people don’t know that midwives don’t have role-specific legal limits on their working hours, while pilots, HGV drivers and train operators do. We asked them to share their thoughts on the fact that UK midwives can work 24+ hours without a break. Leah Hazard, midwife and mother, has started a campaign to change this. #YourBirthplaceTheirWorkplace #midwives #maternitycare #pregnancy #voxpop

They're renaming the National Memorial Arboretum — and thousands are pushing back The Staffordshire site, which welcomes more than 300,000 visitors a year is set to become the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens in September. “Changing the name of such a significant landmark would result in the loss of its unique identity, which has been carefully built over the years” says Robert Brown who started the petition. More than 9,000 people have signed — among them veterans, ex-services families, and civilians who say the current name honours everyone the site was built to remember, not just the military. “The name 'National Memorial Arboretum' signifies its importance and standing as a central point for remembrance in the United Kingdom." More than 4,000 people have signed a petition demanding UK water companies be held accountable for waterway damage — after a Conwy resident spotted brown effluent gushing from an overflow pipe while walking her dog. Linda Price, who started the petition, says living by the River Conwy has long been "a real joy" — but that joy has been "tainted by the disturbing reality of witnessing sewage being discharged into its waters." She is calling on the government to impose strict penalties and force water companies to meet environmental standards and commit to restorative practices. The Conwy spill has drawn wider condemnation too. Singer and environmentalist Feargal Sharkey has gone as far as calling for a referendum on privatisation. A still active petition calling for the water industry to be returned to public ownership is on over 300,000 signatures. Petition link 👉

71,000 people signed Leah’s petition so far, and the number is still rising. We went to Parliament Square on International Day of the Midwife to speak to supporters of Leah Hazard's petition. Among those we spoke to: Bell Ribeiro-Addy — MP for Clapham and Brixton Hill Gillian Meldrum — Retired NHS midwife and member of the Association of Radical Midwives Dr. Anna Byrom — Midwife Educator, CEO of All 4 Maternity and publisher of The Practising Midwife Journal and The Student Midwife Journal. The petition calls for one simple change that could make a big difference to maternity care: legally enforceable, role-specific limits on midwives’ working hours. Baroness Amos is sharing her recommendations to Health Secretary Wes Streeting in June. The window for change is still open. Their workplace is your birthplace.

A "dedicated motorhomer" is calling on local councils to stop fining motorhomers for overnight parking — and treat them like tourists, not a "problem". Anthony Norbury started his petition on Change.org after seeing councils across the UK crack down on motorhome owners with bans and fines. There are now over 755,000 registered motorhomes in the UK — their owners spend around £50 a night in local businesses. "Recent changes in regulations and attitudes have increasingly positioned motorhomers as a problem, rather than a legitimate and environmentally friendly mode of tourism," Antony says. "We are often unfairly targeted, facing restrictive parking rules, biased perceptions, and even hostility in certain communities." 🔗 Petition: c.org/cnrw4jGX

It's a victory both on and off the pitch for York City. After 10 years out of the Football League, the club returned in style — 108 points, and a dramatic 103rd-minute winner at Rochdale to seal it. Plans for an open top bus parade to celebrate were initially rejected by the council and police — until thousands of fans made their voices heard on a Change.org petition…. "In a matter of days, they proved what we already knew: this city is proud of its football club, and it wasn't going to let this moment pass without a proper send-off," said Seth Sowerby, Chair of the York City Supporters' Trust and the man behind the petition. The parade takes place on Thursday 7th May. "Bring the kids. Bring your grandparents. Bring your voice. This is our day," said Seth.

“We need the IRGC proscribed today. We needed it years ago. The time for theatrical diplomacy is over." - petition organiser Elika Ashoori This week, the UK Government committed to introducing legislation to proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation. The announcement is expected in the King's Speech on 13 May. After that, a bill must clear multiple stages in both Houses of Parliament before it becomes law, which could take months. Elika Ashoori, whose father Anoosheh was held in Evin Prison for four and a half years before his release in 2022, started a petition on Change.org calling for urgent proscription before this week's announcement. It now has over 36,000 signatures. "If the Prime Minister believes the IRGC is a terrorist threat to British soil, why are we waiting months for the King's Speech?" she says. "Every day of delay is a day we allow their industrial-scale killing machine to function with impunity." Petition link 👉 c.org/RMyxDxSP

"I stood there holding it, and I felt sick." Kayleigh, a mum from Manchester, found a SHEIN swimsuit — labelled age 8 — with padded, cupped breast cups in the lining. She's calling on SHEIN to remove padded and structured cups from all children's clothing. Nearly 25,000 people have already signed her Change.org petition. Petition link 👉 c.org/KNTyG8jJ

EU pet passports are no longer valid for UK residents travelling to Europe 🐾 On 22nd April, a new EU Animal Health Law came into force. With just five days' notice from the UK government, thousands of pet owners are now facing vet bills of up to £350 per pet, per trip. Many people have been left confused, with differing policies for transport companies — P&O are turning pets away without the new paperwork, while Brittany Ferries are still accepting old passports for now. Kristen Bond quickly launched a petition to 'Reverse new guidance on pet travel to the EU' — it already has over 1,200 signatures. "Since the UK's exit from the EU, various changes have impacted citizens and businesses, and now, even our pets are feeling the consequences," she says. She believes reconsideration is essential not just for pet owners, but due to potential animal welfare implications. Petition link 👉 c.org/FLXvYQ6M

Susan Whittles, 70, was killed by a driver who had already failed his UK driving test twice. Under current rules, that driver was still legally allowed on the road. UK residents who fail their driving test must display L-plates, drive only when supervised by a qualified driver, and cannot drive unaccompanied until they pass. That same standard does not apply to drivers from non-designated countries, who can revert to driving unsupervised on their foreign licence for up to 12 months — even after failing multiple UK tests. Reflecting on his loss, Susan's husband Bill said: "I still have flashbacks to the horror Sue must have felt as he hit us." The petition is calling for anyone who fails a UK driving test to be subject to immediate and consistent restrictions — including clear limits on unsupervised driving and stronger oversight for repeat failures. Over 40,000 people have signed. Petition link 👉 c.org/fPZtSFB7

Classified as a probable carcinogen by the WHO. Banned for 13 years. Cornwall Council just tried to bring it back. When glyphosate is sprayed on roadsides and pavements, it doesn't stay there — it runs into drains, rivers and the sea. Cornwall has over 300 miles of coastline and some of the most popular wild swimming spots in the country. What goes on the pavement doesn't stay on the pavement. Petition starter Tom Scott says local councils have been left with an impossible choice: "They must either agree to routine use of glyphosate on their roads and footways or take on full responsibility for maintenance themselves. This puts councils who want to keep glyphosate away from their communities between a rock and a hard place." 9,495 people have already signed his petition. On Tuesday, councillors voted 61 to 7 to push back. Cabinet portfolio holder Loic Rich said the message was "really clear" — but the vote was advisory meaning cabinet is not legally obliged to act. The spraying is still scheduled for May. Petition link 👉 c.org/wdDXGjym

Three calls to his GP. No face-to-face appointment. Joshua Haines was dead within days. A coroner ruled there were "missed opportunities" to get him urgent medical help. He was 30 years old. Six months after Joshua died, Jess's Rule came into effect — an NHS policy won by Andrea Brady, who lost her daughter Jessica at 27 after 20 GP visits went nowhere. 465,473 people signed her Change.org petition to make it happen. The rule is now NHS policy. But too many people don't know it exists. If you contact your GP three times with the same or worsening symptoms, they must: Reflect — review what's been said, consider what's been missed, and offer a face-to-face appointment if previous consultations were remote. Review — look again at any red flags regardless of your age or background, and seek a second opinion if needed. Rethink — refer you for further tests or specialist input if something still doesn't add up. Joshua died six months before this rule existed. Know your rights. Petition link 👉 c.org/QVpfrcJL
