Anduri Utsav – The Butter Festival of Dayara Bugyal The Butter Festival, locally known as Anduri Utsav, is a vibrant annual celebration held from August 16–18 in the breathtaking meadows of Dayara Bugyal in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand. Set at an altitude of nearly 11,000 feet, the festival is celebrated by local villagers and shepherd communities as an expression of gratitude to Nature and Lord Krishna for protecting their cattle during the high-altitude grazing season. Unlike traditional Holi celebrations, people joyfully smear fresh butter, milk, and buttermilk on one another, turning the alpine bugyals into a lively “Butter Holi.” Deeply rooted in Garhwali culture, the festival comes alive with traditional folk dances, the rhythmic sounds of Dhol-Damao, community prayers, and celebrations marking the safe return of livestock before the harsh Himalayan winter begins. #Uttarakhand #AnduriUtsav #ButterFestival #DayaraBugyal

The Mritunjaya Group of Temples, Dwarahat The Mritunjaya Group of Temples in Dwarahat is a sacred and historically significant temple complex built by the Suryavanshi Katyuri dynasty between the 10th and 11th centuries CE. Showcasing beautiful North Indian Nagara-style architecture, the complex stands as one of Kumaon’s finest examples of early Himalayan temple craftsmanship. Protected by the ASI, the main east-facing temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Mahamrityunjaya, the “Vanquisher of Death.” Its classic triratha layout includes a central garbhagriha (sanctum), antarala (vestibule), and pillared mandapa beneath a towering curvilinear stone shikhara. The complex also houses a smaller shrine dedicated to Bhairava Baba along with the remains of several miniature subsidiary shrines, preserving both the spiritual and architectural legacy of ancient Uttarakhand. #Uttarakhand #Dwarahat #MritunjayaTemple

Akhrot (अखरोट) : The Nutty Treasure of the Himalayas Akhrot, or walnut, is an important traditional dry fruit grown in many parts of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, especially in the cooler regions of Kumaon and Garhwal; known for its rich taste, nutrition, and long shelf life, akhrot has been a valued part of pahadi food culture and mountain livelihoods for generations. Uttarakhand has historically been India’s second-largest producer of walnuts after Jammu & Kashmir. Walnut trees are commonly found near village homes, terraced fields, and forest edges. Rich in healthy oils and nutrients, akhrot reflects the natural abundance and agricultural heritage of Uttarakhand’s mountain regions. #Akhrot #Walnut #Uttarakhand

Not everyone receives the call to Kedarnath. Thousands dream of it, but only a few make it. I was one of them and no one else in my bloodline has ever done this. I was the first. After years of planning, I finally made it to Kedarnath in May 2022. I traveled solo from Bangalore and stayed there for 3 days because I didn’t know if I’d ever get to go back. Kedarnath isn’t just a tourist spot or a Mahadev temple. For me, it’s a dream destination where I left all my fear, pain, struggles, worries, and stress — everything that was destroying me inside. You won’t believe this, but from the day I came back from Kedarnath until today, I haven’t faced any real trouble in life. Mahadev isn’t just a god to me. He’s my best friend who protects me wherever I go. I’m a girl who works a 9-hour job, never goes out, doesn’t party, has no friends — just an introvert focused on work. Yet I did a solo trip without any guide. As I traveled alone, I met so many other solo travelers on the way. I met families. I made new friends. With all of them, I walked for 9 hours and reached the top. I met a few friends there, and I’m still in touch with them. Those were truly good days to look back on and remember. It was my first trek. It was hard. It wasn’t easy. But I did it, and nothing bad happened to me. As soon as I reached the top, I screamed. I didn’t feel tired. I was overjoyed. Even though the weather was extremely challenging compared to Bangalore, I was safe. It was a call from Mahadev, and I still carry that day as one of my biggest achievements in life. हर हर महादेव 🔱 To those who are planning: don’t lose hope. You will surely make it one day. And I will always say — going to Kedarnath will never make you regret it. But make sure you go with pure intention and a pure heart. Feel the divinity there. It’s heaven — the real heaven. And I suggest you go on foot. You will be proud of yourself. This video was taken on the 15th of May, 2022, early in the morning. It’s been four years since May 2022, and a lot has changed in Kedarnath — so many new buildings and more facilities now. But the divinity I felt there? That’s still the same. And so is the peace Mahadev gave me.

The Timeless Tradition of Himalayan Farming in Uttarakhand For generations, oxen have been at the heart of traditional farming in the mountain villages of Uttarakhand, helping farmers plough terraced fields and sustain agriculture across the steep Himalayan landscape; using wooden ploughs and age-old techniques passed down through generations, pahadi farmers cultivated crops like mandua, jhangora, wheat, and paddy with the support of these hardworking animals. #Uttarakhand #MountainFarming

India’s First Lichen Park in Munsiyari, Uttarakhand The Uttarakhand Forest Department has developed India’s first lichen park in Munsiyari, located in the scenic Pithoragarh district of the state. The park has been created to spread awareness about lichens and their ecological importance in the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. Locally known as “Jhula” or “Patthar ke Phool,” lichens are fascinating organisms formed through a unique symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae. Commonly found across the forests, rocks, and high-altitude landscapes of Uttarakhand, they survive in some of the harshest Himalayan environments and grow slowly on rocks, tree bark, and old wooden surfaces, adding vibrant green, yellow, orange, and grey textures to the mountains. Highly sensitive to pollution and environmental changes, lichens are considered important indicators of clean air and healthy ecosystems. The newly developed lichen park in Munsiyari highlights the rich biodiversity of the Himalayas while promoting conservation, environmental education, and eco-tourism in the region. #LichenPark #Munsiyari #Uttarakhand

Bakhli : The Traditional Cluster Homes of Kumaon Bakhli refers to the traditional cluster-style homes commonly found in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, where multiple families of the same lineage lived together in rows of connected stone-and-wood houses built closely around shared courtyards and narrow pathways; designed for community living in the harsh Himalayan environment, these homes reflected strong social bonds, cooperation, and the self-sufficient lifestyle of mountain villages. With carved wooden doors, slate roofs, and traditional Himalayan architecture, old bakhlis remain an important symbol of Kumaoni heritage and village culture. #Bakhli #Uttarakhand

The Sacred Ardhnarishwar Temple in Guptkashi Located in Guptkashi in the Kedar Valley of Uttarakhand, Ardhnarishwar Temple is a sacred and ancient shrine where, according to local belief, Lord Shiva appeared before the Pandavas in his Ardhnarishwar form after the Mahabharata war. Burdened by the sin of killing their own kin, the Pandavas came seeking forgiveness from Lord Shiva, but Shiva, angry with them, avoided giving darshan and disappeared from this very place, giving the region its name Guptkashi, meaning “Hidden Kashi.” It is believed that after praying to Goddess Parvati near the sacred Manikarnika Kund, the Pandavas were finally blessed with the divine darshan of Ardhnarishwar, the combined form of Shiva and Shakti. The temple, built in a style similar to Kedarnath, also houses the sacred Manikarnika Kund where two continuous water streams believed to be the hidden Ganga and Yamuna merge together. Nearby stands the ancient Vishwanath Temple, adding further spiritual significance to Guptkashi’s sacred temple complex. #Ardhnarishwar #Guptkashi #Uttarakhand
