Congratulations to #UMichPath researchers, Drs. Jolanta Grembecka and Tomasz Cierpicki on their recent @US_FDA approval of the first once-daily oral therapy for relapsed/refractory NPM1-mutant acute myeloid leukemia. “This transformative discovery, grounded in research conducted in the Department of Pathology, marks an important moment for our community. The work of Drs. Grembecka and Cierpicki, now recognized through FDA approval, reflect the strength of our scientific environment and our commitment to improving care for patients. It is meaningful to see U-M Pathology contribute to a therapy that is making a real difference for those with leukemia,” said Charles Parkos, Chair of the Department of Pathology. Dr. Yi Bao’s path to cancer research began with a painful loss: watching a family member endure chemotherapy for lung cancer, only to gain a few more months of life. That experience drove him to pursue a PhD in cancer biology, and today his work is uncovering new ways to make immunotherapy work for more patients. michmed.org/JDj9r

"My name is Sophia, and I am a Pediatric Phlebotomist Specialist at @MottChildren's Hospital. The part of my job I enjoy most is successfully obtaining blood from patients with challenging veins, as well as cultivating relationships with patients and their families over time. A lot of folks, not just kiddos, have anxiety surrounding pokes! Getting to help even one person understand that having their blood drawn or port accessed isn’t such a treacherous event makes it worth it. Childhood medical experiences can dictate the care patients choose to receive or not receive for the rest of their lives. I like to think I have a positive impact on how people perceive receiving medical care long after their youth!" #UMichPath #NationalPhlebotomistWeek

"Being a phlebotomist is more than my job. It is my way of connecting, caring, and fighting alongside my patients during some of their most vulnerable moments. I am deeply emotionally involved in my work, and every patient teaches me something about strength, resilience, and humanity. I am also grateful to work with an incredible team of coworkers whose knowledge, compassion, and support help me grow every day and make me more efficient and confident in what I do. My love for photography began as another way to honor people by freezing meaningful, unforgettable moments. I now volunteer twice a year, creating portraits for cancer patients and their families. This is an experience that is both educational and healing for my soul. With 12 years in phlebotomy and over five years behind the camera, I am thankful to do work I love at a place as extraordinary as the University of Michigan."
