✨ A night to remember, a milestone on the horizon ✨ This past weekend, our Social Work community came together for an unforgettable Gala Night! The evening was filled with connection, celebration and pride. What made this night even more special? This spring marks a historic moment as we prepare to celebrate the graduation of our very first Bachelor of Social Work cohort 🎓 From the dance floor to convocation, this gala was more than just a night out — it was a celebration of how far this group has come, and where they’re headed next. #SocialWorkGala2026 #UNBSocialWork #ClassOf2026 #ProudlyUNB

To Cristian Ramirez Rodriguez, a UNB graduate physics student, physics and poetry go hand in hand—and his poems prove it. Cristian won first place in the literature category of the 2025 Canadian Association of Physicists Quantum Arts Competition, a national initiative celebrating creativity inspired by quantum science. Ramirez Rodriguez’s winning poem, “Pauli Matrices with Scaling Factors,” came to him as he was improving an evaporative cooling system at UNB’s Quantum Sensing and Ultracold Matter Lab. Research security becomes a core function at UNB as universities face tighter rules and growing external pressures. A position that rarely existed in Canadian universities a decade ago is now close to the centre of how research is done. Hired in April 2025 as UNB’s first research security manager, Greg Curtis (BSc’08) (MScE’11) works to review grants, partnerships and sensitive projects. His mandate is to protect the university’s research, people and reputation while supporting an open research culture. Read more ➡️ bit.ly/42pHE0Y

Congratulations to Sohan Kobiri, Colton Kammerer and Aditya Raval who will be representing UNB at the 2026 Global Map the System Competition at the University of Oxford 👏 This year’s competition at UNB was exceptionally close, with several teams delivering thoughtful, rigorous and very well-executed projects. Sohan, Colton and Aditya examined the complex system of Canadian undergraduate education in the age of generative AI. Their project explored how incentives, assessment design, workload pressures, institutional expectations and evolving social norms interact to shape student behaviour. In particular, their work highlighted why GenAI can become a rational choice for students in a higher education system that rewards polished output, speed and grades more clearly than deep learning. Please join us in congratulating the team and wishing them continued success as they prepare for Oxford!

Congratulations to Dr. Kalikinkar Mandal, NB Power Cybersecurity Research Chair and associate professor of computer science at UNB! Mandal has been awarded an NSERC Alliance International Catalyst Quantum grant to explore better privacy safeguards for AI and machine learning tools. Read more about this grant ➡️ bit.ly/4dV4KUk As the use of AI and machine learning continues to rise and diversify, concern is increasing over protecting personal data from being leaked through model learning processes or siphoned by targeted attacks. Advances in quantum computing add an extra layer of risk, as the unique properties of these computers allow them to break encryption significantly faster than before – what used to take centuries could now take hours. Mandal's research will address these privacy issues by developing new quantum-safe protocols to encrypt the data during storage in, processing by, and transfer to and from ML models – not just for today’s risks, but for tomorrow’s quantum ones as well.

UNB is now home to Canada’s first infant metabolic chamber—one of only three custom-built machines of its kind in the world, positioning UNB as a national leader in infant metabolism research. Delivered to Dr. Maryam Kebbe’s Perinatal‑Pediatric Health & Development Studies (PEADS) Lab at UNB in early 2026, the chamber’s arrival marks the beginning of a new era in understanding how the earliest days of life shape long‑term health. UNB is now the only Canadian institution capable of collecting whole‑body metabolic data from infants within days of birth through the custom-engineered infant metabolic chamber. The Allison D. McCain Commons on the UNB Fredericton campus shone on April 2 as it hosted the 12th annual Engineering Design Symposium. It was the first time the symposium had been held at the McCain Commons since the 1,500-square-foot, three-storey structure—built of mass-timber-and-glass at the entrance to the Sir Edmund Head Hall engineering building—opened in May 2025. Please join us in welcoming Elder Ramona Nicholas as the new Nikanahtpat (Director) of the Mi’kmaq‑Wolastoqey Centre at UNB. A Wolastoqey Nation member of Nekutkuk (Tobique First Nation), Ramona brings deep knowledge, lived experience and decades of leadership in Indigenous scholarship, cultural stewardship, community support and ceremony. Grounded in both Wabanaki knowledge and Western academic practice, she has long been a guiding presence at UNB as an educator, knowledge keeper and advocate for Indigenous students and communities. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to Elder David Perley for the wisdom, generosity and steady leadership he has brought to the role during his recent term as acting Nikanahtpat. His connection to UNB spans decades, and his guidance has been instrumental in shaping the MWC into a vital space for Indigenous teaching, knowledge, language and ceremony on our campuses. We are honoured to walk forward together. #UNB #MWC #IndigenousLeadership #Wolastoqey #WelcomeRamona

We are honoured to celebrate Mary Matilda 'Tilley' Winslow, and the Everyday Champion VIVE Award she received posthumously earlier this year. Tilley Winslow was the first Black Canadian woman to graduate from the University of New Brunswick, earning a BA in 1905. She ranked top of her class winning the Montgomery-Campbell Classics Award, was a debate team star and excellent mathematician. Tilley was previously high school valedictorian in Woodstock, NB. Promoting gender and racial equity, she homeschooled and mentored hundreds of students; created educational programs in rural communities; served as Dean of the Normal Department at Central Alabama College; lectured at Springfield College, MA. Her leadership and advocacy advanced social and educational equity, inspiring generations across New Brunswick and beyond. Pictured here is Dr. Kathie McAlpine, Tilley’s granddaughter, who was in attendance to accept the award at the event.

New research by a UNB researcher has deepened our understanding of the relationship between hearing loss, social isolation and dementia. Analyzing large-scale survey data is helping researchers and medical practitioners better understand how a variety of factors, like hearing loss and social isolation, might affect your likelihood of developing dementia. New research involving an expert at UNB’s DataNB institute has been published that answers some questions, and raises new ones. Read more ➡️ bit.ly/4teXk2M
