2/3 - The Australia Day and New Year’s Day public holidays accounted for almost 5% of drownings over the 12yrs to June 2022, the research published in @anzjph shows. Drownings were more than 4x higher on public holidays and were also more common on weekends & school holidays.

Congratulations to Binod Rayamajhee and Janelle Tong for receiving the Dean's Award for Outstanding PhD Theses! Binod's thesis, supervised by Scientia A/Prof Nicole Carnt, Prof. Mark Willcox, and Prof. Fiona L. Henriquez, is titled "Investigation of genotypes and intracellular microbiome composition of Acanthamoeba spp. isolated from clinical and environmental samples." Janelle's thesis, supervised by Prof. Michael Kalloniatis, Dr. David Alonso-Caneiro, and A/Prof Sieu Khuu, is titled "Application of novel techniques enabling detection of early functional deficits in ocular pathologies." This award recognizes PhD graduates who have completed their degree promptly, produced a thesis with minimal corrections, and achieved outstanding levels of excellence. Well done, Binod and Janelle!
