A nurse anesthesia graduate’s celebration quickly turned into a life-saving moment after she performed CPR on a restaurant chef who collapsed during her post-graduation dinner in Philadelphia. Stories like this highlight the critical thinking, training, and calm under pressure that anesthesia professionals bring to patient care every day, both inside and outside the clinical setting. USAP celebrates the dedication of anesthesia professionals who are prepared to step in and make a difference when it matters most. Workforce shortages, production pressures, burnout, and workplace culture challenges continue to shape the future of anesthesiology. In a recent issue of the ASA Monitor, D. Matthew Sherrer, MD, MBA, FASA, FAACD. and USAP’s Dr. Mo Azam, MD, MBA, FASA, explore how “paradox thinking” can help leaders move beyond either/or decision-making and embrace solutions that support both operational demands and clinician well-being. Mules and Tightropes: Embracing Paradox Thinking in Anesthesiology highlights the importance of investing in culture, education, and training, even during periods of significant strain across the specialty. She studied in the bleachers. Her daughter was watching. In the 1990s, USAP-Maryland Platform Chief Laurie Meginnis was taking nursing classes one or two at a time, textbooks open on her lap while her kids played volleyball. She wasn't just building a career. She was showing her daughter what was possible. Nearly 30 years later, both Laurie and her daughter Kelly Lock are CRNAs at USAP-Maryland. They live 15 minutes apart. Laurie oversees more than 130 CRNAs across Maryland hospital sites and still steps into the OR herself. Kelly is Site Chief CRNA for the Johns Hopkins Surgery Center series, managing three ASCs and their clinical teams. Kelly says watching her mother shaped everything. "Seeing my mom become a CRNA — and being able to shadow in the ORs — that merged my desire to be an advanced practice provider with being able to have a family and be present for them." The influence ran both ways. When Kelly finished CRNA school in 2020, she spotted a leadership opportunity at a USAP site and called her mother: You should look at this place. It's right up your alley. Laurie joined just before Covid hit. "It's the best thing I ever did," she says. At USAP, both found an organization that matched their values; one that supported clinical staff through the pandemic rather than cutting pay or shifting CRNAs out of their specialty. When asked what she'd want to say to her daughter, Laurie doesn't overthink it: "Very, very proud of her. She's gone through adversity to get where she is, and she's handled it all very, very well." This Mother's Day, we're proud to celebrate Laurie, Kelly and all the clinician-parents who lead by example, inside the OR and out. #MothersDay #USAP #Anesthesia #CRNA #WomenInMedicine #HealthcareCareers

Happy Earth Day! In March USAP Drs. Jay Okojie, Jon Oletsky, Dayo Lukula, and Kas Pauliukonis from our Maryland team traveled to Comayagua, Honduras for a week-long surgical mission in partnership with the Paul Chester Children’s Health Foundation. After screening more than 120 patients on Sunday and setting up three operating rooms, the team spent Monday through Friday delivering care across ear, nose, and throat (ENT) and general surgery cases, completing a total of 100 procedures, including 68 laparoscopic cholecystectomies and 32 ENT cases. Beyond the numbers, the experience reflected the power of collaboration, compassion, and shared purpose. Dr. Okojie reflected on the experience: "For some time I've had a deep desire to do a mission trip. It's a very enriching way to give back to the world and, from everyone I have spoken to about doing one, it's a very rewarding experience. Collectively we did 100 cases in 4.5 days. The team had such good camaraderie and a committed, kind group. The patients were all very thankful and wrote individual thank you notes to each and everyone of us." We are proud of our clinicians who continue to extend care beyond the OR and into communities where it is needed most. #USAP #EarthDay #Anesthesia #MissionTrip #GlobalHealth

At USAP, patient-centered care is more than a principle, it’s at the heart of everything we do. Dr. Esteban Arredondo, part of our San Antonio team, recently showed how patience, compassion, and attentiveness can help ease the stress of a nerve-wracking procedure. A patient shared how he answered every question and provided calm support, making them feel safe and cared for every step of the way. This dedication reflects one of USAP’s key pillars, commitment to care, from in-depth pre-op preparation to careful recovery room oversight. Interested in joining a team that puts patients first?
