Shane Beamer and his staff are bringing in five-star talent. Rivals gives out 32 five-stars to end the year, and Gamecock commits Zyon Guiles (No. 24 and the No. 1 IOL) and Julian Walker (No. 26) will be getting one. Darius Gray dropped from our site’s rankings but remains an industry five-star and the industry’s No. 1 IOL, making two. And technically, Sequel Patterson was a five-star and the No. 10 player in the country before reclassifying into 2026. That makes four five-star talents joining the class, along with the No. 10 QB and No. 8 DT in the country. For a program that had a down year, I’d say that’s pretty good.

This was my take on LB Fred Johnson when he committed to South Carolina. After a huge camp, he was ranked an 86 and 872 nationally at the time before becoming a top-100 prospect and Adidas All-American. My comparison at the time and I know some people like to take it out of context was that he was a freak athlete like Nick E and could have a similar impact, not that he was going to be Nick Emmanwori. But both had similar recruitments and could make an impact like Nick did. So far, I feel like he’s starting to prove that take right, especially after taking home SEC Defensive Player of the Week in his first-ever start with a monster game: 10 tackles | 1 INT | 2 PBU

Seeing Gus Malzahn and Thomas Castellanos going off vs Alabama is certainly interesting to watch just because I think Gus should have played him years ago at UCF but let him leave in favor of John Rhys Plumlee. JRP wasn’t bad, but Thomas Castellanos and RJ Harvey would be scary.
