In the desert, water means life. Walker Lake is a vital oasis for migratory birds. These rare desert lakes give birds a safe place to rest & refuel during their epic journeys across dry landscapes. We continue to monitor water conditions in Walker Lake: #home" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">webapps.usgs.gov/walkerbasinhyd…

🌄 As the sun sets on 2025 and we flow into 2026, we are grateful for every drop of progress we've made in monitoring and understanding our water resources in this driest state in the nation. 💧 📷: 393310114475001 - #dataTypeId=continuous-72019-0&period=P7D&showMedian=true&showFieldMeasurements=true" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-loc… #WaterIsLife #NevadaScience

It gets dark so early these days, but hydrologist, Steve Reiner was rewarded for working late with this beautiful view of Amargosa Flat playa north of Ash Meadows at dusk. It is partially submerged with water from recent precipitation events.

We've been measuring this 1,000 ft deep well in SE Nevada since 1993 to understand long term changes in groundwater levels. Data collection was recently discontinued due to loss of funding. If you’re interested in funding it, let us know! 374215114453101: waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/inventory…

Rain in the Amargosa basin yesterday resulted in more water in the Amargosa River at HWY 127 near the CA/NV state line than we’ve seen in quite a while. Hydro tech, Kristy Benson, visited & measured a streamflow of 56.2 cubic feet/second. 10251259: #dataTypeId=continuous-00060-0&period=P365D&showMedian=true&showFieldMeasurements=true" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-loc…

When synthetic dust suppressants are applied to dirt roads & construction sites, do they stay put? We collected soil & storm water samples on & offsite from puddles after rainstorms & analyzed them for the chemical. Find out what we found in this article: ow.ly/bEAm50X2vV0
