On this date, First Lieutenant Presley N. O'Bannon, who with seven other Marines was part of a force of Greeks and Arabs led by American Consul William Eaton, raised the United States flag for the first time over a conquered fortress of the Old World at Derne, a stronghold of the Tripolitan pirates. Two Marines were killed and one wounded in the assault on the walled city.

In honor of @WomenHistoryMonth The Association would like to acknowledge the tremendous accomplishments of one such Marine, Lorna M. Mahlock. She was the first African-American to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in the @USMC in 2019. In 2022 she was promoted to MajGen. Well done Marine!

In honor of @WomenHistoryMonth The Association would like to acknowledge the tremendous accomplishments of those that served in the Marine Corps. One such Marine is Angelia Maness, the first female SgtMaj to be stationed at the oldest post in Corps, Marine Barracks, Washington, DC. She served in this billet from 2013 - 2015. Well done Marine, well done & Semper Fi.

In honor of @womenshistorymonth we would like to recognize SgtMaj Joy Kitashima, the 1st female Force SgtMaj in @USMC history. She assumed her duties in March 2023 @IIIMEF. The SgtMaj serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the Commanding General. Well done Marine & Semper Fi.

In honor of @womenshistorymonth The Association would like to acknowledge the contribution of one such female. Angelia Maness the 1st female SgtMaj of the @USMC Marine Barracks, "8th & I." She graduated boot camp in September 1987, and her service includes deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. She retired on Jan 13, 2017.

In honor of @womenshistorymonth, The Association would like to acknowledge the contributions of one such female. Nicole A. Mann, the first female @USMC @NASA_Astronauts. She was commissioned a 2dLt in 1999; a Naval Aviator in 2003, a test plot in June 2009, she was 1 of 8 selected to the 21st NASA astronaut class. She flew her first NASA mission on October 5, 2022, working 6 months in space.

In honor of @womenshistorymonth, The Association would like to acknowledge the contributions of one such woman. We are proud to acknowledge the accomplishments of Anneliese Satz:, the first female F-35B pilot in the @USMC . She grew up in @CityOfBoise, Idaho & is a graduate of @BoiseState.

In honor of @WomensHistoryMonth The Association would like to acknowledge the accomplishments of one such woman. Vernice "Flygirl" Armour, was the @USMC first African-American female combat pilot, earning her wings in July 2001. She flew with @HMLA169 during the invasion of Iraq becoming America’s first African-American female combat pilot. She completed 2 combat tours. She now has a career as a professional speaker sharing her story & as an expert on creating breakthroughs in life. @VerniceArmour
