One early highlight was in 1999, when he led the dive team that recovered the bodies of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and her sister after their plane crash off Martha's Vineyard. Cao is a combat veteran with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia. He spent years disarming roadside bombs and explosive threats on the battlefield, and in his final tour he directed sensitive operations, counter-drone work, and other key tasks for special operations command. He picked up several big awards along the way, including the Bronze Star Medal and the Defense Superior Service Medal.
