Catholic. Striving each day to be a little more reactionary. Only dogmatism allows meaningful discussion and true progress.

@eugyppius1 In software, even "light" development, the issue of dates will crop up eventually. If it happens often, you get used to check every time and it's manageable. If it happens rarely, you'll end up paranoid.

more seriously on this, differences in American/Euro usage don't matter very much unless you've spent a lot of time in both places. then something breaks in your head and you will be doomed periodically to screw up all dates where the date number is 12 or less.
doomer@uncledoomer

the argument that the european date format is more "logical" never holds up to any scrutiny. the month is going to be the smallest range of numbers, 1-12. day of the month is next, ranging 1-31, and then the year, the largest number. perfectly logical. europeans are just coping.

@writriverdale The ship crew is my favourite. The text is explicit that Jonah says he's running from God and they have to throw him out. But they still try to fight the storm as much as possible before doing so.

Took me a bit to understand It's not deep, she simply says "human resources" because Yud notes that AI will treat people like resources.

Magnifica Humanitas Encyclical by Pope Leo XIV Summarised by human per paragraph: 1. Every generation has an ability to shape its era, whether towards a dignified and just world, or an inhumane and unjust hellscape. Christians know following Christ leads to the former.

@moriko38 In the West is the same but with either Rome, or the Age of Exploration. We don't have a singular book that really covers that role.

There is a saying in East Asia: If you want to instantly bond with men in their late 20s or older, just bring up 'Romance of the Three Kingdoms.' Your chances of success will skyrocket.

Take back the other 968 acres of my ancestral ranch that my dipshit Boomer uncles either sold off or gave away to developers and lawyers, carve a bunker into the hillside to store resources in for future generations of my family, and then keep doing what I normally do around the farm but far more efficiently. Also never pay taxes again, because unless the IRS breeds their own Homelander who the fuck is going to make me?

You wake up as Homelander, but with your morals/immorals and sense of self. What's your next move?

@BrianNiemeier I prefer strategy/managerial games, where this particular idiocy is less prominent. But big studio rot is still present, Civ VII comes to mind.

@USpiaggia Yeah, game studios have been gaslighting us into thinking their interactive movies are the inevitable evolution of video games since the 90s.

@johncwright2001 But all of our energy sources are outrageously convenient! Starting from stuff like fruits that convert solar energy in a very compact, easy to absorb package. Yes you have to take care of the trees and harvest, but the ROI is insane from an energy point of view.

@johncwright2001 The funny thing about technology is that we interiorized "no such thing as a free lunch" so the idea of having a convenient near-limitless source of energy immediately after coal sounded too good to be true.

Trust the Science! “There is not the slightest indication that [nuclear energy] will ever be obtainable. It would mean that the atom would have to be shattered at will.” — Albert Einstein, 1934. “Anyone who expects a source of power from these atoms is talking moonshine.” — Ernest Rutherford, 1933. “There is no likelihood that man can ever tap the power of the atom… The glib supposition of utilizing atomic energy when our coal has run out is a completely unscientific utopian dream.” — Robert Millikan, 1928.

@OPaladins2 @Otto129830 There's a sad lack of imagination behind that. One does not need to believe in a religion to recognize that people, even entire nations, can truly believe in its tenets, and base their politics, economics etc. on those beliefs.

I read an absolutely amazing textbook a bit ago on the Crusades, by a fellow named Johnathan Riley-Smith. He's one of the foremost historians on the Crusades (and a Knight of Malta), and a materialism-denier in general. He said at one point in his book that "Men and women were prepared to sacrifice health, wealth, life itself, and be prepared to commit repeated acts of violence, for a cause they believed to be just and even salvational. Their actions were expressions of a piety that may appear alien to us, but was entirely real to them". This, I believe, can be quite broadly applied to the medieval period as a whole, and so hearing people in movies set in the 1200s treat the faith like a 21st century sociologist (derogatory) is insane to me.

@AStratelates @WomanCorn @Lil_Stinkyy From what one can glean from the text, all religions in Dune are heavily syncretist, and the Orange Catholic Bible got books added in the millennia between "now" and the story's setting.
