Very smart people have been laughing at USTR's approach to deriving reciprocal tariffs. It is uncalled for and unfair! One must invoke the "Mercantilist Trade Deal" Theorem and the "Professor, can we cease and desist with this nonsense" Rule. The rest is basic derivations.

Focused on food and ag products…first, USMCA stands. Thats the bulk of US imports/exports for food and ag. But some large increases for some country imports. But I suspect this will evolve quickly.

Tariffs can successfully achieve strategic goals and therefore be worth the temporary cost. They are not, however, good economic policy to replace other forms of taxation. They don’t effectively support domestic production and make goods more expensive. FWIW.
