West Ham wanting £80m for Mateus Fernandes is pure fantasy. He's a promising player with huge potential, but he's still raw and has plenty of areas to improve. £50m plus £10m in add-ons is already a generous offer. At some point, you have to be realistic.

This is exactly why having better decision-makers at the club matters. Manchester United's problem has never really been spending money. The problem has been spending it correctly. For years, we paid huge fees for players without a clear strategy behind the deals, handed out massive wages and constantly found ourselves asking what the actual rationale was. Meanwhile, other clubs were spending similar amounts, sometimes even less, and achieving far more success because their recruitment was driven by structure, planning and profile suitability. Every summer there was always one player we were told we absolutely had to sign or the club would collapse. Miss out on Branthwaite and we're finished. Miss out on Evan Ferguson and we're finished. Sell Bruno and spend £100m+ on Baleba because it's "for the good of the club." Now it's Anderson. The reality is that no single signing determines the success or failure of a season. What matters is building a balanced squad with players who fit the manager's ideas, want to be at the club and are identified through proper scouting and data analysis. That's why I'm glad Richard Arnold and John Murtough are no longer making football decisions. The current structure seems far more disciplined, less emotional and more willing to walk away from deals that don't make sense financially. Long may it continue. I don't expect every signing to work, that's football, but I do have far more confidence in the people making the decisions today than I did a few years ago.
