Sara Santos, a distinguished postdoctoral fellow at #UTIG, worked with soil scientists at #TAMU to make it happen. They used a cotton wick to deliver water, introduced helpful fungi to the plant’s roots, and added vermicompost from earthworms to the moon dirt mix.

“Deposits like these are poorly understood. Shallow water bays across the world are hypothesized to be significant sources of natural methane,” explains Amendola. “We are likely underestimating how these bays may impact greenhouse gas emissions.” Media provided by Amendola.

The team also uses a core rig raft with a manually operated corer that can penetrate up to 20 meters to collect samples of the sediment and gas.

Did you know there are deposits of methane and other gasses in the bays around the Corpus Christi area? #UTIG researchers recently traveled to #SouthTexas to better understand and map out these deposits through seismic imaging and drilling for core samples.
