Captured on one of our trail cams, this American mink was making her way around the Refuge most likely in search of a meal. Mink are nocturnal and solitary, preferring not to encounter humans. Like skunks, minks can defend themselves by spraying a foul smelling substance!

"Who cooks for you?" The Barred owl's call is distinctive and you are more likely to hear them rather than see them. Barred owls do not migrate and stay within close range of their home territory. During March, nesting begins and the female will lay 2-3 eggs. #birds #owls

When the bridge washed out on Unexpected Road many years ago, the township did not wish to rebuild it. If the water level is low, it is possible to hike over the stream. Usually, the water level looks like this and the residents use the access for their own purposes.

During the winter, beavers collect and store food items near the entrance to their home lodge. This is called a food raft or feedpile. This feedpile is imperative for their survival when the temperatures go below freezing and there may not be access to fresh food.
