For most of the last century, Syria was at war with its own geography, dare I say with its very own destiny... 🍃 Just look at the map honestly. Syria sits on the eastern wing of the Mediterranean, within reach of the Gulf's oil, the Caspian's gas, and the vast energy reserves of Central Asia. It is the land bridge between the Arabian Peninsula and Egypt, the seam where the Turkic, Persian, and Arab worlds meet. The caravans of the old Silk Road crossed here. The faiths and empires of antiquity collided here — it was in Syria that Rome met Persia. The land was never meant to be a fortress. It was always meant to be a passage, a connector, a hinge between civilizations. In December 2024, the Assad era closed. What has happened in barely a year since is the kind of reversal historians usually measure in decades. The United States and the European Union lifted their sanctions. The terrorist designations that had isolated Syria's new leadership were revoked. Syria's president sat across from the American president — first in Riyadh, then in the White House itself. The UN Security Council voted, almost unanimously, to turn the page. The World Bank came back to the table. A country that had spent years as the world's pariah was, improbably, handed a chance at greatness — and welcomed back into its Arab and regional family. Most telling of all, the map has begun to reassert itself. The gas line linking Azerbaijan through Turkey to Aleppo is flowing again. The old Kirkuk–Baniyas oil pipeline, dormant for over twenty years, is being revived to carry Iraqi crude to the Mediterranean once more. The Arab Gas Pipeline is reaching north toward Turkey and Europe; Qatari gas is being mapped along the same arteries. Chevron, QatarEnergy, and Gulf partners are signing agreements. Syria's own oil output, a trickle a year ago, has multiplied roughly tenfold in months. Planners now speak openly of a "Four Seas" vision, with Syria as the hinge between the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Caspian, and the Gulf. There is a hard-headed reason the world should care. With nervous eyes fixed on the Strait of Hormuz, every strategist is asking the same question: is there another way to move the energy that powers the planet? There is. It runs through Syria. A stable Syria is a safer corridor for the world's trade. An open Syria is a market of more than twenty million people — young, restless, and hungry to build — rejoining the global economy, where a shopkeeper in Damascus can finally take a card from a customer anywhere on earth. Syria's recovery is not a charity case. It is a shared interest. But honesty is the price of being believed, so this must be said plainly: none of it is guaranteed. The deepest test is not even financial at all. It is whether Syrians of every sect, faith, and origin choose to live together — not merely beside one another, but for one another. Money flees chaos. Development flees fear. The one thing that turns this opening into an era is stability, and stability is not delivered by summits or signatures. It is built street by street, neighbor by neighbor. What gives reason for hope is that, for the first time in a hundred years, geography and ambition are finally pointing in the same direction. A country is reuniting its territory, mending fences with every neighbor it can reach, and choosing the role the land was always shaped for. The new leadership's stated creed is simple — honesty, and a pledge to build — and it is being measured, as it should be, against deeds rather than words. Syria has spent a century quarreling with its own map. That quarrel is ending. What comes next is not certain. But for the first time in a very long while it is genuinely possible: that this land stops being the place where the world's powers collide, and becomes the place where the world's roads and peoples finally meet. The bridge is reawakening. The only question left is the one Syrians have earned the right to answer for themselves.

An important article here by @95AhmadMousa, detailing #Israel's military campaign in #Syria -- including the persistent arrest of Syrian citizens, most for farming. Fwiw, the numbers of ground incursions & arrests are significantly higher -- as tracked by SyriaWeekly.com
