WHY THE NORTH WILL NOT BREAK POWER ROTATION IN 2027 A PERSONAL NOTE TO NIGERIANS By Dr. Taiye Garrick As 2027 draws closer, the noise is getting louder. Every day, there’s a new argument suggesting that the presidency must return to the North. I’ve listened to these arguments, and honestly, they don’t sit right with me. Not because politics shouldn’t be debated. But because they ignore history. And worse, they misrepresent the character of Northern Nigeria. The truth is simple: the North has a long memory when it comes to political agreements. And it has shown, again and again, that it values trust over convenience. Let’s go back a bit. When President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua died in office in 2010, power moved to Goodluck Jonathan, a Southerner. Most Nigerians accepted that transition because it was constitutional and humane. But in 2011, when Jonathan decided to run again, something shifted. Within the PDP, there was a clear understanding that the North was supposed to complete its turn. Northern leaders and voters didn’t push back because of tribe or bitterness. They pushed back because an agreement had been broken. And in politics, once trust is broken, everything else collapses. By 2013, many Northern stakeholders walked away from the PDP. That moment mattered. It wasn’t drama. It was principle. That walkout helped give birth to the APC and marked the beginning of the end of Jonathan’s hold on power. Now fast forward to 2023. After eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari, the North had every advantage. The numbers were there. The influence was there. If the North wanted to hold on to power, it could have tried. But it didn’t. Instead, Northern APC governors openly insisted that power should move South. They backed Bola Ahmed Tinubu and stood by that position, even when it wasn’t politically convenient. That single decision cleared the path to Aso Rock. That matters. A lot. So when I hear people now saying the North will push to remove Tinubu in 2027 after just one term, I shake my head. It doesn’t add up. The same North that resisted Jonathan for breaking zoning cannot suddenly become the villain that destroys it. That would be a betrayal not just of Tinubu, but of history itself. Zoning was never a Southern invention. It is a national understanding, embraced by all sides because Nigeria is too complex to be run on winner-takes-all politics. Once you destroy that balance, you don’t just hurt one region. You destabilize the whole country. Stopping Tinubu after one term would send a dangerous message: that political agreements mean nothing, and that power is taken, not earned. If that happens, zoning as a stabilizing idea is finished. This is why I’m speaking up. Not for Tinubu as a person. But for Nigeria as a country. The North gains nothing by pushing for the presidency in 2027. Nothing. What it stands to lose is far greater: trust, credibility, and the fragile sense of balance holding this country together. If we still believe Nigeria should work, then we must show our children that our word still means something. That even unwritten agreements are respected. That sacrifice and fairness still matter. I believe the North understands this. History suggests it always has. Let Tinubu complete his eight years. Let the South finish its turn. Then, and only then, should we talk about what comes next. That is how nations stay together. That is how trust survives. That is what Nigeria needs right now. The destiny of millions of Nigerians rest on the shoulders of these five judges. We urge the judges to do just and not set a negative precedence for our nation. Our nation is sitting on a keg of gunpowder, we hope that Justice will prevail!
