The current win betting for the Preakness implies a 30% chance that the winner will come from the following group. Gotta love these Triple Crown race win pools. Bull by the Horns Corona de Oro Crupper Great White Pretty Boy Miah Robusta

The reason why the race fell apart is not the times, it was the amount of horses all running at the same pace up front. No horse was fast enough to pull away & about 8-10 horses bunch up front. I discussed how this scenario was likely and Renegade & Golden Tempo would be the horses that would benefit from this setup. Listen to the last 10 minutes of my analysis on Bet the Close that dropped the Tuesday before the derby. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bet…

Golden Tempo: With fractions of 22.3, 46.2, 110.4, I really don't understand why the race fell apart this badly. This was not the radioactive pace we saw in 2022 (21.3, 45.1, 1:10.1) or 2001 (22.1, 44.3, 1:09.1), but it still fell apart like it was, which probably speaks to a lack of quality in the race compared to previous years. He let it all develop in front of him and picked up all the pieces. My guess, if you run this race 100 times, Renegade probably wins close to 50 of them. Really not sure how he got out-run by this horse, who ran a terrific race, but the speed figures really tell the tale here.

@DanWolken If you’re comparing year to year previous Kentucky Derby. This was an incredible weak crop of 3 year olds. Lack of quality horses in this race couldn’t handle the 1 1/4 mile distance. Odds board reflected that.

Having now watched the Derby replay a few times, I’m a little confused how the race melted down so much on the front end when the pace wasn’t really that hot by Derby standards.

I’m sticking with RENEGADE in the Kentucky Derby. Not because he ran at @OaklawnRacing, but because of what he showed there: -Push button -Has a big kick…as soon as the rider asks him to go, he flies. -Will get the distance -Is peaking at the perfect time -I believe he’s versatile in running style CHIEF WALLABEE is my second pick. He’s a super talented horse, but just needs to get a little better, and I think the blinkers could help him get there. INCREDIBOLT third for me: hope the eight weeks between races doesn’t hurt his chances. He likes Churchill and has always seemed like a pretty talented colt. He didn’t beat much at Colonial but sure did it the right way.
