On April 4th, a likely mentally-ill African man was behaving erratically in a Market Basket parking lot. I exchanged words with him, encouraging him to leave both the parking lot and the beautiful state of New Hampshire entirely. For this, I was arrested. Neither of us came within physical reach of one another, and I expect the matter to be dropped by the city of Manchester. Additionally, I am exploring legal action against the city. This incident is yet another example of how our government treats mentally-ill and dangerous African men as saints, and how the police prevent decent men from maintaining order in American cities and towns. The footage of my arrest is below. As someone who loves New Hampshire and attempts to make our state look good, it embarrasses me that our police our this incompetent.

Your screenshot is from an AI search, and it's a) clearly pulling from an outdated version of the law and b) factually incorrect in other ways (New Hampshire has never had a "proof of insurance" requirement during traffic stops, for instance, because auto insurance is not required by law here). Here's the pre-2019 version of 594:2: law.justia.com/codes/new-hamp… This version states: "A peace officer may stop any person abroad whom he has reason to suspect is committing, has committed or is about to commit a crime, and may demand of him his name, address, business abroad and where he is going." Note that it still doesn't require anyone to present a physical ID. The law was changed in 2019 to read: "A peace officer may stop any person whom the officer has reason to suspect is committing, has committed, or is about to commit a crime. An officer may request the person's name and address, but the officer shall not arrest the person based solely on the person's refusal to provide such information." In the video, the police arrest Kaufmann solely for not providing a physical ID fast enough to suit them. No other reason is given for the arrest. You're also conflating "detain" and "arrest". They're not the same thing. Yes, police can detain you in New Hampshire if they suspect you of committing a crime. The law is clear that they cannot arrest you for declining to provide ID while detained. Also, your manners are bad.

@UltBugWrangler @jeremykauffman Completely false... HILARIOUSLY false, actually. You are required, by law to provide ID when asked for it by an officer in ANY state during an official police investigation of a crime. Which is why she LITERALLY said that... in the video.

@ChristianHeiens The only author I know of whose work consistently embodied this theme was H. Beam Piper. A great shame that he died before his time.

It's almost like "Order" itself is bad. After all, the First Order was bad. They're space Nazis, and space Nazis are bad. To rule is also bad, at least openly. Of course, the heroes always win in the end, and in doing so, they still get to rule, but they're never allowed to admit it. We need stories where "the Empire" is objectively the good guys and the ruling order openly admits that they're the ones who wield power, but in the name of something higher that's clearly good, just, beautiful, and true. We desperately need more works of fiction that depict an explicitly imperial power as a beacon of civilization.

I will never get over the fact that Disney chose to name the heroes of the Star Wars sequels "the Resistance", despite the fact that the Rebel Alliance overthrew the Empire decades earlier and re-established the Galactic Republic. There's a broader lesson in there about how modern writers and artists think about everything. They ALWAYS have to be the brave revolutionaries and are never willing to accept that a day could come when they themselves become the ruling order.

@elonmusk I love Grokipedia. Could the "trending" list be made more family-friendly, though? I want my kids to be able to use the site to research school projects, but I don't feel comfortable with them getting a Pornhub recommendation first crack out of the box.

@JesseKellyDC They keep saying stuff like this, and they're going to create a situation where the Right decides that we just can't afford to have any more elections.

The NH state government has had a Republican trifecta for 8 of the last 10 years. (Dems had a majority in the NH House and Senate from 2018-2020; Governor remained Republican.) I'm not sure why our federal representation is so bad, but it's not at all reflective of the state. Good, important bills get signed into law every year in support of homeschooling, gun rights, election integrity, etc. I moved here in 2006, and the state is a lot freer today. That's largely due to the efforts of Free State Project movers and their allies, many of whom now serve in the State Legislature (including our current House Majority Leader). LibertyWin.org has a great list of pro-liberty laws passed in NH from 2009 to present.

@NHSHCommenter @Granger4NH @FallRiverReport Ridiculous. NH state reps get paid $100 per year. Absolutely everyone who serves in the State House could be making a lot more money doing something else. They serve anyway because they're willing to make the sacrifice to keep the state moving in the right direction.

New Hampshire is eliminating mandatory annual vehicle safety and emissions inspections for most passenger vehicles, with the requirement ending on January 31, 2026, and inspection stickers no longer needed starting February 1. Drivers must still ensure their vehicles meet safety standards, but the change — part of the state budget — has sparked debate, with some expressing concerns about increased road hazards from undetected issues like rust or failing brakes, while others welcome the cost savings; this makes New Hampshire the only New England state without such requirements.

One last thought on this: I think my single favorite thing about living in New Hampshire, more than any specific policy, is the feeling of momentum being on the side of the good guys. This is kind of hard to quantify or capture in a score/list, but here's what I mean: when I left Virginia in 2006, it was getting less free every year. I arrived in NH and it seemed like things were okay for the time being, but there were also a lot of people in the state government trying to turn us into Massachusetts. Every year, some Democrat in the Legislature would bring up and income tax bill or a mandatory seatbelt bill or a red-light camera bill, and the good guys would just barely defeat it. That changed. More Free Staters moved in. They started getting elected to the State House, then to the State Senate. Today, maybe 25% of our State Representatives are either Free State movers or fellow travelers. Jason Osborne, our House Majority Leader, is a mover. Now, I can't even remember the last time the Communists bothered to bring up a seatbelt bill or an income tax bill. If anyone did, the Democrats themselves would axe it without ceremony to avoid losing the next election, and none of them have time for that anyway -- they're too busy fighting school choice expansion, tax reductions, voter ID requirements, etc., etc. Ever since I started paying attention to politics, it always seemed to be the same story: every year, the bad guys would flood the zone with a dozen different goshawful Commie proposals, and we'd stop three if we were lucky. Then they'd bring those three back the next year along with nine new ones. Living in NH has completely flipped that script. Now it's the freedom people pushing through more and more wins every year while the left complains about it. Not only is it a fresh, clean feeling that the whole family can enjoy, I think it's also energized our side to get more involved and rack up more victories. After all, it's a lot more fun to fight when you know you can win. It's tough to put a price on that.

@Porcu9ine @THORSLIGHTNIN @LPNH @grok Other things I love about NH: no state income tax, no state sales tax, restriction-free Constitutional Carry since 2017, raw milk is legal, great homeschooling freedom with a vibrant homeschooling community.

@sarahadams When they say "this" FBI, they mean "the Trump FBI". The whole point of the post is that we shouldn't trust the stuff that the Biden FBI said about Crooks. The Community Note on this one is just way off.

Proud to say that my church, the Zeal Movement in Manchester, NH, met the moment perfectly. Pastor Phil Tuttle played a very moving video of Charlie and spoke to how God wants us to act in moments like these. He also pointed out that when both Jesus and Stephen were martyred, there were many who celebrated their deaths. It reminded me that there is nothing new under the sun, and that God will triumph over the evil we see today just as He has done in the past. I have never been more thankful for my church community, and I hope this encourages you too @Will_Tanner_1 .

This is the word from many churches It is because those leading them are cowards and would rather let a Christian martyr's death pass quietly than anger/alienate the few leftists there It was particularly craven for them to behave like this on this Sunday, as so many people went to church for the first time in a while, if ever, this Sunday, thanks to Kirk's assassination But the cowardice won out. We're a far cry from the "Deus Vult" church, and I really don't think the Church (all denominations) will survive if it continues with this cowardice

My church didn’t mention Charlie Kirk. I’m not sure how I feel about it… I’m a little disappointed tbh😔

Property represents the stored value of time. When you destroy property, you fundamentally erase a human being’s time, never to be reclaimed. When you destroy property, you’re telling its owner(s), “I don’t give a f—k about you, and I don’t give a f—k about your finite time on earth as a person.” Pick up any physical object you own. There are three ways—and only three ways—by which it could have come into your life: 1. You created it 2. You purchased it 3. Someone gave it to you In the case of (1), you directly exchanged your time to make the object. In the case of (2), you exchanged your money (or some other store of value) in for it, after exchanging your time to earn said money. In the case of (3), someone else exchanged their time to procure the object before rendering it to you. That’s it. Those are the only three ways, and they all result from exchanged time. There’s no way around it. Property equals time, the most precious, irreplaceable substance in our lives and in this universe. Property shouldn’t just be respected; it should be cherished. I will never abide people casually destroying it.
