A wellness account called the medieval peasant free, grounded, and living in beautiful harmony with the land. Here is Robert's actual day. See how many of those words survive it. 5:00am. Robert wakes in the cold and does not get to choose otherwise. He is bound to this manor by law. He cannot leave the village without the lord's permission, cannot marry off a daughter without paying the lord a fine for it, and cannot even grind his own corn, because the lord owns the mill and takes his cut of every sack. So much for free. Robert is about as free as the gatepost, and the gatepost at least owes no rent. 5:30am. Pottage. There is no meat in it, because the meat belongs to the lord, the deer belong to the king, and the fish in the river belong, depending on the bend, to the bishop. Robert eats grain because grain is the only thing in this whole landscape that is legally his. This is what living off the land means when you own none of it. 6:00am. Out to the field, in boots with a hole he packed with rags back in October. The rags are wet. They have been wet since October and will stay wet until June. This is the grounded part. Robert's feet have not been properly dry in eight months, and the skin between his toes has developed opinions. He works the lord's ground first this morning, the days he owes, before he is allowed anywhere near the strip that feeds his own children, because the lord's land always comes first. Earthing influencers pay good money to stand barefoot on cold wet earth for ten minutes. Robert does it all winter, for free, and would pay good money to stop. Midday. A short rest, leaning on the spade. Last year this land gave him a poor harvest, so come February he was eating the grain he'd set aside as next year's seed, which is the farming equivalent of burning the furniture to stay warm, and guarantees this year is worse. There is your harmony. The land is a creditor with weather, and it does not forgive a debt. Evening. Three children at the table tonight. There were five. William did not survive the winter of 1241, six years gone now, and he was not the only small grave behind the church. None of this was unusual. Roughly a third of the children born in this village do not see five. That is the real price of living close to nature in 1247, and it falls due most winters. 8:00pm. Bed, in the dark, the whole family in one room, listening to the wind find the same hole in the roof it found last year. If Robert survives the next infection, the next bad harvest, and his own teeth, he may well reach his fifties. Plenty did. They reached them hungry, in pain, and owing money to a man in a big house they were never permitted to leave. Eight hundred years from now, someone with a podcast will look at all of this and call it freedom. Robert has heard the word. He has just never been allowed to live inside it.
