What's the point of remaking an "Ultima" game if you can't have some fun with the gameplay parameters?

Richard Garriott mused about a possible new "Ultima" game, using "Shroud of the Avatar" as a testbed, on his recent birthday livestream.

@ADWhittaker Think you’re conflating two different games there. The mobile game had nothing to do with castle building; it was a solid iPhone RPG. There was also an “Ultima” Evony clone around the same time, which if memory serves was a browser game.

@UltimaCodex Bah. The last time they did something with Ultima, they made a crappy mobile castle building game. I have no expectations for anything EA does with the IP.

EA renewed and expanded their portfolio of "Ultima" trademarks recently, sparking a bit of speculation that something was up with the IP.

Two odd datapoints from this week. A couple days ago, EA renewed the trademarks for Ultima. Today, or yesterday, someone started a rumour that @RichardGarriott had re-acquired the Ultima license from EA. Might be nothing. Probably is nothing. Fun to speculate, though.

Version 1.3 of this "Exult"-based remake of "Ultima 6" brings numerous bug fixes, a fully-functional cooking system, and other new features besides!

The development team behind "Ultima 8: Exult" asked the "Exult" team for increased height levels in the cross-platform "Ultima 7" engine. Now, we can see what they've implemented with it!
