Since today is the start of Black History Month, here's a map of the black population of the United States by County. You can definitely spot the outline of the southern "black belt" here that stretches from Louisiana and Arkansas to Virginia.

THREAD: While a lot of the discourse on here has been about whether progressives had a good night on the federal level here in Illinois last night, they undoubtedly had a good night on the state level. Let's take a look at some of their wins...

While State Senator Karina Villa came short of winning the State Comptroller primary against the Pritzker-endorsed Margaret Croke, she was able to win Chicago! She put together a coalition of Hispanics and progressives, which overcame Croke's base of moderates and Black voters.

Progressives notched a huge win in Illinois's #HD40 on Tuesday when community organizer Miguel Alvelo-Rivera unseated incumbent Democrat Jaime Andrade. This northwest side district saw one of the last vestiges of the establishment machine fall with Alvelo-Rivera winning by 11.

@_fat_ugly_rat_ It's always fun to see the effect of local races on this map. That cluster of deep red counties in western Illinois on the 2026 vs 2024 President swing map were all in an ultra competitive State House Republican primary between the establishment and the Freedom Caucus!

Disclaimer ***Primary composition has no predictive value for the general election*** Yesterday Illinois held its primary elections and Dems outvoted Reps there by about 40 points. This brings our nationwide total up to 4.6M votes cast in Dem primaries and 3.8M in GOP primaries.

Combine these wins with several progressive holds/wins on the county government level, the progressive movement in Illinois is still alive and well /END

In #HD40, on Chicago's northwest side, community organizer Miguel Alvelo-Rivera unseated Democratic incumbent Jamie Andrade, a big target for progressives in recent years. He ran on raising the minimum wage, protecting the LGBTQ+ community, and fighting back against ICE.

Yesterday's Democratic primary in #IL09 featured a three-way race between Evanston mayor Daniel Biss, progressive activist Kat Abughazaleh, and state senator Laura Fine. Here's a map showing the local divides — showcasing Northwestern and Chicago's Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods.

Here's how the city of Evanston voted in last night's #IL09 primary. Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss was able to win his home city thanks to big wins among white voters. However, Kat Abughazaleh was able to win big with Northwestern students and kept it close elsewhere.

@admcrlsn Running the data rn in Evanston, some of the closest areas between Biss and Kat were areas with at least a 20% Black population. In fact, the Biss-dominated areas tended to be heavily white areas near downtown and in the northern part of the city

Every candidate should engage with Black voters, but the electorate in IL-09 in the last three high turnout Democratic primaries (2020, 2018, 2016) was between 5-6% Black (per L2). We also don’t have precinct-level results so we don’t know how she did in heavily Black areas. And most Black voters in the district are in Evanston, where Biss is the current mayor and Fine is the current state Senator.

@Burninating123 Considering she beat multiple state legislators and came within a few points of beating one of the most recognizable progressives in Chicago all as a candidate who had questionable (at best) connections to Chicago? Yeah that's doing well in my book lol

@Uncrewed Is losing a primary in a blue district "doing well"? The best candidate won and she'll have to change districts again to have another chance. Biss is going to be the guy for a while.

Alright so far on the “Reasons why centrists think Kat Abu did so well” list we have: -Terminally online lefties liked her (I promise you less than a quarter of the district is terminally online) -People only voted for her because she’s hot (We love misogyny folks!)

@CJohnStella @nikicaga But saying that's the only reason/main reason is just stupid. If I told you Zohran beat Cuomo because people thought he's hot, I'd be a dumbass

@Uncrewed @nikicaga There are a lot of politicians, of both genders, who have benefited greatly from being hot. Idk why you’d deny this. Namely, Zohran
