Progressives notched a huge win in Illinois's #HD40 on Tuesday when community organizer Miguel Alvelo-Rivera unseated incumbent Democrat Jaime Andrade.
This northwest side district saw one of the last vestiges of the establishment machine fall with Alvelo-Rivera winning by 11.

@CAPrimaryHater He does free gas card giveaways whenever he’s about to run for office and I noticed him promoting one for next month.

@_fat_ugly_rat_ It's always fun to see the effect of local races on this map. That cluster of deep red counties in western Illinois on the 2026 vs 2024 President swing map were all in an ultra competitive State House Republican primary between the establishment and the Freedom Caucus!

In #HD40, on Chicago's northwest side, community organizer Miguel Alvelo-Rivera unseated Democratic incumbent Jamie Andrade, a big target for progressives in recent years.
He ran on raising the minimum wage, protecting the LGBTQ+ community, and fighting back against ICE.

Yesterday's Democratic primary in #IL09 featured a three-way race between Evanston mayor Daniel Biss, progressive activist Kat Abughazaleh, and state senator Laura Fine. Here's a map showing the local divides — showcasing Northwestern and Chicago's Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods.

Here's how the city of Evanston voted in last night's #IL09 primary.
Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss was able to win his home city thanks to big wins among white voters. However, Kat Abughazaleh was able to win big with Northwestern students and kept it close elsewhere.

Every candidate should engage with Black voters, but the electorate in IL-09 in the last three high turnout Democratic primaries (2020, 2018, 2016) was between 5-6% Black (per L2).
We also don’t have precinct-level results so we don’t know how she did in heavily Black areas.
And most Black voters in the district are in Evanston, where Biss is the current mayor and Fine is the current state Senator.

@Burninating123 Considering she beat multiple state legislators and came within a few points of beating one of the most recognizable progressives in Chicago all as a candidate who had questionable (at best) connections to Chicago?
Yeah that's doing well in my book lol

@CJohnStella @nikicaga But saying that's the only reason/main reason is just stupid.
If I told you Zohran beat Cuomo because people thought he's hot, I'd be a dumbass
