What just happened in Nepal is a generational monument. For the first time, a discord vote (run by Nepalese youth) has successfully elected an interim prime minister (the first ever female prime minister in the country). A lot is said, here’s what actually went down and WHY. tldr; Nepali government was overthrown in 36 hours and the interim Prime minister was chosen through a discord vote. I think this was the first internet native revolution. To start with Nepal is a multi-party democracy with the republic being only 20 years old which was achieved by a 19 day long mass movement for overthrowing monarchy, where people died to write a new inclusive constitution which established Nepal as a federal democratic state. This resulted in majorly three political parties rising up and an unfaithful tug of war started where the same leaders clung to power, rotating the prime minister’s chair like a game of musical chairs with no matter who wins elections, they're the ones taking the final oath while citizens saw little change. By July 2024, two of the largest parties out of the three formed a coalition, ruling without accountability. Frustration grew as the same faces continued to dominate politics. Forward to September 2025, the Philippines movement was at its peak and Nepal started following it. Nepali youths, frustrated by corruption and incompetence, launched a TikTok trend called “Nepo Babies” where they made reels comparing the lavish lifestyles of politicians’ kids with ordinary citizens of Nepal, many of whom couldn’t afford basic necessities like healthcare and education. Coincidentally, on September 4th, 2025, the Nepali government imposed a ban on almost all major social media platforms, demanding they register their entities in Nepal and comply with strict government moderation rules. Naturally, these companies refused. The problem is, over 20% of Nepal’s population lives abroad, and suddenly they had no proper way to communicate with relatives back home. Many local businesses and creators relied on social media for their livelihoods, and this decision wiped out opportunities in a country already facing mass unemployment. The lack of empathy, combined with the suspicious timing around the Nepo Baby trend and years of disappointment with the establishment, was simply too much. Suddenly, on September 5th, a call for a peaceful protest on September 8th started circulating on TikTok, Reddit, Discord, Instagram, etc. What’s interesting is, this was a decentralized protest, all organized via internet without any central figure. Since it was organized collectively by youths on internet, this protest was given the title of “Gen-Z protest.” On September 8th, more than 12,000 marched in Kathmandu. Peace turned deadly when police opened fire on students, some just 18 or 19 years old. Nineteen died, over 100 were injured. Police even stormed hospitals, and videos of brutality went viral. September 9th escalated further. Citizens attacked politicians’ homes, burned mansions, and released prisoners from jails. Opposition operatives infiltrated crowds and fueled violence. Three state institutions — the Federal Parliament, Supreme Court, and Singha Durbar — were torched. The Prime Minister resigned and fled under army protection. What many missed is that while this was a Gen Z revolution, the intent was to demand a better tomorrow, not vandalize. There was clear infiltration meant to instigate chaos. Still, almost every major politician’s house was torched, and many were beaten brutally — in streets, rivers, and their mansions. It felt like a warzone, with people coordinating attacks, sharing real-time updates, and even warning each other which locations to avoid. The army stepped in later that night, taking control and calling for negotiations with protestors. The problem: there was no representative. This was a leaderless, decentralized movement. So people started discussing and polling on Discord and Reddit about who should represent them and who could be nominated as interim leader. Independent mayors and former Chief Justice Sushila Karki emerged as candidates. On the night of September 11th, the country waited until 1 pm as the President, ex-Chief Justice Sushila Karki, and the Army Chief met. By September 12th, Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim Prime Minister, becoming Nepal’s first female PM. Parliament was dissolved, the President remained, and leadership had been decided not in party rooms but on the streets — and in online forums. It was an unfortunate event where many things went wrong, but the sequence of events was unique: everything originated and spread through the internet. Years of dissatisfaction that had brewed online exploded in two days, overthrowing a government through a collective, leaderless movement. A government that survived decades of corruption fell to a decentralized youth uprising armed with apps, anger, and courage. Some call it Gen Z destroying their own country. Others call it a rebirth. But most importantly History was made in Nepal which was truly internet first. I believe we will continue to see more decentralized movements and blockchain based governance will become more important.

p.s. Corporations are to be blamed too. After monetizing the Nepali audience for the last 30 years, how much investment has come from these companies into the country? And when the country goes into fires, they ALL prefer to stay silent. We live in the world with inefficient and corrupt governments all around, but I have a feeling, one day, when the corporations will take over all the power in the world and control on everything, we might think about national states as a great good comparing what "KPI achieving" corporate teams will do with humanity...

Discord voting in that situation was a genius move. Unbelievable, but indeed (and finally) we see Web3 community management tools applied to something truly urgent, real, and important. A long way to go, but the start is tremendous. Hope and example for all youth in the world came from a place no one would ever expect. And at last but not least, after all people of Nepal went out to clean the mess on the third day, all world was heart touched. For me, that was the biggest difference from many other unsuccessful violent attempts to change for good. Keep it up, Nepal!🇳🇵❤️

I already miss Nepal 🇳🇵 Only spent 30 days there, but it feels like much more, as I now have about 30 new friends and so many stories to share. I got to see things I never imagined seeing in person, like the mountains, and met a LOT of kind and welcoming people. @Ronak0010 was a great host (even if he looks like an altar boy). He set me up at @UnderKong Hacker House for two weeks, where the @SuperteamNP build Station was happening. I got to meet builders, share ideas, and connect with people who are just as bullish on Solana as I am. It was a whirlwind of experiences. Late nights talking on the balcony with our crazy Russian housemates, making pizzas and barbecues with guests, exploring narrow streets full of colors, and walking through temples where the scent of incense lingers in the air. We have even played D&D on one sunday! But beyond the fun, it was genuinely inspiring. There’s something mesmerizing about the way Nepali treat each other. Always gentle, always polite — even in the busiest markets. I’ve never been to a place where respect feels so natural. The way they fold their hands in a greeting, speak softly with a sense of humor, and place their left hand over the right when giving or receiving something — it’s not just cultural, it’s a lesson in humanity. Honestly, I would stay longer just for that. Food was a festival in itself. Momos (a dozen varieties of them), Biryani, spicy chicken dishes… And don’t even get me started on buffalo meat. Affordable and delicious. As a digital nomad, Nepal is a hidden gem. Yes, there are water, electricity, and internet disruptions, but somehow, people find ways around them, creating a charming sense of resilience. The Builder Station was a highlight. From decentralized air and water quality measurement to loyalty platforms connecting fans and creators, from speed control systems designed to save lives to network tools and games. Real innovation, driven by builders who see beyond the hype. I hosted a mini-workshop to share the little experience I have and a few tips. Also, @streamflow_fi promoted a mini-bounty to incentivize users to integrate it. I saw DePin and consumer projects with genuine potential. Not just another round of “more of the same” but actual solutions. I’ll bring more stories in the coming days. But if you’re a company looking to tap into a fresh, vibrant market, sponsoring early-stage events here can be extremely cost-effective — the talent and passion are undeniable. If you ever have the chance, go visit Nepal. For something that is far better than the mountains: the people. 🌄🙏
