Our key challenge working in health is to refocus our efforts on addressing these inequalities. But to do this we need to understand the historical roots, the language we use, the biases we each have, and to listen 👂 and engage under-served populations throughout the work we do.

Language and terminology 📚 is important, when we say #vulnerable and #marginalized, we are putting the focus on deficit within population groups. When we say under-served, we are shifting the dialogue to institutional and systemic problems.

Health outcomes in nearly every domain, ON AVERAGE are improving... Over the past 20 years, most #infectiousdiseases and even #noncommunicablediseases are decreasing. But not for everyone...

Since Canadian confederation, the life expectancy ON AVERAGE has nearly doubled. But not for everyone... #cdnpoli

I had three key messages to share with the group when it comes to under-served populations: 1. Language and terminology MATTERS. 2. We need to critically reflect on WHO we are serving. 3. Outcomes not good intentions need to be our focus.

The talk was about #Indigenous, #InnerCity and #Migrant populations in Canada, and how we as researchers, healthcare practitioners, and policy makers need to re-orient our thinking and actions to better serve these populations.

Rather than stating "vulnerable" or "marginalized", when we use "under-served" population, we shift the dialogue from saying there is a a deficit in a given population to there is a systemic and institutional problem - @twpiggott #terminologymatters

Access to care varies tremendously from 🌍 to 🌎. So the percent dying from TB disease varies from <5% in high income 💵 💵 💵 💵 countries to >20% ⁉️⁉️ in low income 💵 countries Ref who.int/tb/publication…

The causes of TB are the determinants of many diseases. If you’re poor, uneducated, live in bad housing, are marginalized, live in an unhealthy community, don’t have access 🛣 to healthcare 🏥 you’re chances of getting sick and dying from illness are always higher.
