In 2022, Kazuki Takahashi — the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! — drowned off the coast of Okinawa while trying to save a woman, her child, and a U.S. soldier who were trapped in a violent rip current. Witnesses watched him jump into six-foot waves and swim toward the struggling swimmers as the water twisted into a whirlpool. The soldier ultimately pulled the victims to safety, but Takahashi was overtaken by the current and vanished beneath the surf. His body was found two days later still in snorkeling gear, and investigators confirmed he died during the rescue attempt.

If you were born a premature baby, you can thank this man for your life. In the early 1900s, most physicians believed that premature babies were “weaklings” who were unfit to survive into adulthood and therefore not worth saving. But a sideshow entertainer named Martin Couney decided to change that with his innovative incubators that he called “child hatcheries.” He would display premature babies at circuses around the globe in his exhibit called the Infantorium, where visitors could pay $0.25 to view a room full of glass boxes containing tiny babies. Couney would use the earnings to work with nurses and doctors to do everything he could to keep the babies alive. His goal was to demonstrate to the public that premature babies could be saved with proper care. Through his efforts, Couney saved over 7,000 lives and by 1943, nearly every hospital in America had one of his incubators. His work completely changed the punlic’s perseption of premature babies and significantly contributed to the development of neonatal care.

In 2009, Larry Murillo-Moncada disappeared after working his shift at the supermarket. He was missing for more than a decade until his body was found when the supermarket was renovated. The man had apparently fallen into a small gap between the wall and cooler, likely dying from dehydration after a few days of being stuck.

Mr. Rogers personally responded to every fan letter he ever received. A 5-year-old blind girl once asked if he could say when he’s feeding the fish because she was worried about them starving. From that point on, every time he fed the fish, he said it out loud.

In 1942, Forest rangers discovered something disturbingly odd at a lake located high in the Himalayas. There were over 200 ancient skeletons with blunt force trauma to their skulls, but the strangest part was that they were from distinct populations that died around a thousand years apart. Researchers say the lake seemed may hace served as a recurring de*th trap over the centuries, with many likely dying from sudden hailstorms which explains the cracked skulls. Many of the skeletons can still be seen emerging from the thawing ice during the summer, some with their hair and flesh still preserved.

A 10-pound mini dachshund named Valerie vanished during a camping trip on Kangaroo Island, then somehow survived 529 days alone in the Australian bush. Rescuers spent months trying to trap her, stunned that such a tiny house dog had endured snakes, heat, and feral predators long enough to actually GAIN weight. Some think she lived off roadkill; others believe someone was feeding her, since no one can explain how she lasted nearly a year and a half in one of the harshest landscapes in the world. When she was finally caught using a trap baited with her toys and her owner’s clothes, vets found her “fit and well,” closing one of the most improbable pet survival stories ever documented.

As part of 1974 social experiment, artist Marina Abromović told visitiors she wouldn’t move for 6 hours no matter what they did to her. She placed 72 items on a table and invited people to use them on her however they pleased with no punishment. There were objects for pleasure including a rose, perfume, and wine, as well as objects for pain including scissors, a whip, and a loaded gun. Visitors were gentle to begin with but gradually got more aggressive once they became comfortable. Within 3 hours, all of her clothes had been completely cut off and some people even started slicing her skin. She was se*ually assaulted various times and had rose thorns stuck in her abdomen. One person even held the gun to her head until someone else took it away. Once the performance was over 6 hours later, the crowd scampered like mice to avoid an actual confrontation. Afterwards, Abramovic said “if you leave it up to the audience, they can k*ll you.”
