@UnionAtlanta
Grassroots movement for housing, healthcare, water, and a seat at the table led by folks experiencing houselessness in Atlanta

We shared this yesterday and thanks to folks it was shared across IG and we were able to get everyone we saw last night a tent. There are still some folks that weren’t there but we know need one so we wanted to share this here. #stopthesweeps

•Folks are being assigned a caseworker but are responsible for getting their documents themselves •There is no plan for after the 30 days and one of the coordinators even said most people won’t last the full 30 days

From this morning; •Partners from home is funding this project with assistance from PAD/Intown (not sure their involvement) •People we’re sent to a mixture of shelters and hotels •They dropped the ID requirement at the last minute •They knew about the sweeps for a MONTH

Came downtown to check on a sweep that was happened and drove down our usual street. Still lots of confusion but PAD is here with Intown collecting folks but only offering 12 rooms (no longer adding people to the list)

We just got word that several of our comrades were left behind when they were told they would receive hotel placement if they moved their tents from the area. There are at least 20 ppl downtown STILL WAITING for hotel placement. Did the city and @partnersforhome lie to us?

UPDATE: We believe we have delayed the sweep and are in negotiations with the state and some agencies: instead of being displaced, we have demanded placement in a hotel until they can expedite and approve EVERY pending section 8 voucher in our group. This is the bare minimum.

RIGHT NOW: jobless and unsheltered people out here near the Capitol are being asked to pack up and leave otherwise they could face getting arrested this morning. They tell me that the state/city resources that were promised still haven’t showed up. More on @cbs46

STOP THE SWEEPS

I am thrilled to officially announce that I have joined @CNN as a Political Commentator. As a @FAMU_1887 student, I applied for the coveted VJ program at @CNN and didn’t get in. To now join the team nearly 30 yrs later is a reminder that a dream deferred is never a dream denied.

Los Angeles is trying to disappear the poor by sweeping encampments in preparation for the Super Bowl. There’s no housing available. We are seeing record COVID cases. Where are the unhoused folks supposed to go? Better not let the tourists see the reality of living in LA!
