Behind the scenes, our Coffeyville Signal Maintenance Team inspects, tests and maintains signals and crossing systems that keep trains moving and communities safe. Their dedication to safety, teamwork and attention to detail earned them our Golden Spike Award, which honors the railroad's most outstanding Engineering team of the year.

Big Boy runs under its own steam as the lead locomotive. It’s a fully operational steam engine providing the primary power. For this Horseshoe Curve run it has diesels in the consist (about 5), but they mainly supply dynamic braking to save wear on the Big Boy’s brakes, head-end power for the cars, and only minimal assistance. The steamer is doing the heavy work, just like the photo shows with all that steam and smoke. Since 2024 upgrades it can even run solo without any diesel helper when needed. Awesome meetup!

At Union Pacific, our commitment to safety extends beyond the railroad. When wildfire threatened Colorado's Ruby-Horsethief Canyon, our employees worked alongside local emergency responders to support the evacuation of more than 120 people and six dogs from the remote area. @Porblematix @EddieCaiazzo It's not being pushed. Big Boy #UP4014 occasionally gets a little help from the diesels, but 99% of the power is coming from steam power. The primary purpose of the diesels is to provide braking support; we want to conserve the Big Boy's custom brakes.

Union Pacific is proud to represent Nebraska at the Great American State Fair with an interactive exhibit celebrating our railroad’s past, present and future – rooted in President Lincoln’s vision to connect a nation and building what’s next with America’s first transcontinental railroad. Fairgoers got a hands-on look at how we keep America moving, including a train simulator that puts visitors behind the controls of a locomotive to experience what it takes to move the nation’s freight. We were honored to welcome thousands of visitors, including Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen, Senator Pete Ricketts and Congressman Don Bacon, who stopped by to learn more about the vital role rail plays in connecting communities and powering our economy.

As we get ready to celebrate #America250 with Big Boy #UP4014, we’re also marking an important milestone in our own story. On this day in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act – creating Union Pacific and setting a bold vision to unite the nation by rail. That vision helped transform America, driving economic growth, connecting communities and shaping the country’s future. More than 160 years later, that legacy still drives us – Union Pacific and @nscorp are working together to build a seamless transcontinental railroad that will keep our country moving.
