Some nasty looking sunspots, particularly in the northwest this weekend--wouldn't be too surprised if a big solar flare was in the works in the northwest soon. Important to keep a close eye on this region (Active Region 3354) as Earth is more strongly *magnetically connected* to this side of the solar disk. The solar energetic particles (radiation) that may result from a significant eruption on the western limb travel along spiraling magnetic field lines, so as the spots continue to move to the west with the Sun's rotation, Earth is coming closer and closer into the crosshairs. In addition to potential radiation hazards for astronauts, minor solar radiation storms can cause high frequency communication issues for users near the polar regions. Only a few minor M-class flares have occurred as of late, but they've been associated with some newly-numbered active regions in the southeast. The spot region of interest in the northwest has been quiet as of late--perhaps too quiet! #spaceweather #spacewx @spacewxwatch
