The Physics of Load Transfer (thanks @grok) When a vehicle corners, centrifugal force causes weight to shift from the inner tires to the outer tires. The simplified formula for the change in vertical load (\Delta F_z) on an axle is described in the formula where: • a_y = Lateral acceleration • W = Vehicle weight • h = Center of gravity height • T = Track width Because track width (T) is in the denominator, increasing it mathematically reduces the amount of weight transferred to the outside tires. Why Reduced Load Transfer Improves Handling • Tire Load Sensitivity: Tires exhibit a non-linear relationship with vertical load. As vertical load increases, the lateral force a tire can generate also increases, but at a diminishing rate (the coefficient of friction effectively decreases) (Ma et al., 2025). • Maximizing Total Grip: By keeping the load more evenly distributed between the inner and outer tires, a wider track allows both tires to operate in a more efficient range of their friction capacity. This results in higher total lateral grip and higher achievable cornering speeds. • Reduced Body Roll: A wider track provides a longer lever arm for the springs and anti-roll bars to resist the rolling moment, which typically leads to a more stable and predictable steering response (Ross & Wenzel, 2001).
