Guys, I’m gonna share a secret for how to deal with the most annoying EO apologists. As opposed the EO apologists of which I personally like and approve. Use canon 64 of Trullo if an EO on Twitter is annoying you and- contrary to what he tells you- has NOT been given the grace of teaching! "A layman must not publicly make a speech or teach, thus claiming for himself the right to teach, but should rather submit himself to the order handed down by the Lord, and to open his ear to those who have received the grace to teach, and to be taught by them the divine things."

@RoyStormcrow No. People who wax poetic about it daily on X are virtually never those interested in comparing different formulations of it. they are virtually always those interested in telling people they worship like a garden gnome if they don’t hold to *their* formulation

@UntoldFortune Dumb. The whole point is to compare different *formulations* of Divine simplicity. The broad definition just helps establish that God does not have parts.

Halam sees in absolute clarity what somehow most Christian theologians don’t see in literal decades of study. would that this were an exaggeration. But it’s not.

@sanjehorah Not sure whether to laugh or cry at this point, but I DID ask for an explanation, and you DID provide it. In hindsight, I’m not sure what I was thinking the other explanation would have been.

@UntoldFortune sex with me in a way doesn't "count", desire for me isn't really desire, but i am still subject to rape then way it practically manifests is that men who are not even attracted to me nevertheless go through all the motions of sexually harassing me

Like its not impossible, right? Early Augustine does some good things with a generally neoplatonic background that lends itself well to mysticism. Late Augustine- in my view- largely turns his back on that. But like thats not an “argument”, right? My issues with augustine arent about mysticism. If Origen gets due credit for what he really does deserve on that topic, then people can praise augustine as much as they want after the fact as far as I’m concerned.

@UntoldFortune Yes, the text frequently mentions Origen as a precursor, as well as Jewish apocalyptic literature and the Greek contemplative spirit, but will argue that Augustine was the foundation of a broader laid framework

Ironically, the consideration of (A) alone SHOULD lead you guys to conclude quite a number of eastern baptisms are invalid. Literally every romanidean on that account ought always be rebaptized by you. The higher order argument is much trickier imo. Ask a large range of christians whether christ “innovated” in baptism, and you’ll get a LOT of different answers. And like even sane easterns like Behr can go Irenaeus and say “Of course baptism was instituted by God Himself *in view of Adam in relation to Christ as the new Adam and definitive consummation of creation itself*. To that extent, baptism *was* begun in Genesis, but not yet finished

There is no better evidence that Rome rejects the position of Pope Stephen today on baptism than that the CDF judged Mormon baptisms invalid, despite using precisely the correct words. Because the very premise of Pope Stephen’s ancient instructions- and indeed the very reason he regarded Marcionites to have valid baptisms in the first place- is that he believed *the words themselves were sufficient*.

Origen’s exegesis of the Song of Songs laid the foundation for like absolutely every version of mysticism in all of Christian history. Not even exaggerating. I’m sure the author has an angle for augustine, but I would need to hear the explanation and concession that the west didnt have mystics before Augustine

@UntoldFortune I'm reading the history of Western mysticism, and it's going to argue pretty soon that Augustine basically laid the foundations for Western mysticism in the West. Is this true?
