@UntoldFortune

In this house, Origen of Alexandria and Julian of Eclanum are patristics and saints. And late Augustine of Hippo is disgustingly liberal.

@EpektasisJohn Probably his Grammar of Belief, but even his Idea of a University is ordered around the illative sense characteristic of the judgment of a conscience

In point of fact, Newman is probably the best on this subject. He understood the weight of a conscience really well and that’s absolutely one of the things I continue to respect him for even after having been disappointed by the relatively low quality of his historical analyses. He was a plenty saintly, admirable, and perceptive man in plenty of other ways.

Actually important. The frequency with which EO in particular dismiss the gravity of conscience is alarming imo. And the Maximos reference is fitting, given how significant the conscience is in the context of his own eschatology.
Fr Christopher Poore@HappyThurifer

Do not disregard your conscience, which always counsels you of the best. It puts before you divine and angelic advice; it frees you from the hidden stains of your heart, and will make you the gift of free speech with God at the time of your departure. St Maximus the Confessor

@EpektasisJohn They might. It is entirely possible and ordinary that people’s consciences and not merely whims conclude in two different directions. And that’s ultimately God’s problem in the end, not yours. Rationality has a real ceiling in this life

@JustinusRomanus It’s literally self explanatory. They never had a scholastic era that recognized that sacred and binding nature of conscience. So they frequently get SUPER dismissive about the concept of it. One of their many vices.

There’s a lot that could be said, but I’ll go right to the most dramatic image of all: hellfire. Neither Maximos nor the Gregory on which hes commenting in the attached believe the purifying fire of hell is *literal* in the manner of- say- Alphonsus Liguori. Rather, they regard hellfire to be an image for the torments of a sinner’s conscience before God’s definitive self revelation in the eschaton.

@UntoldFortune Oh interesting, would you say a bit more about the relationship between conscience and eschatology? I see it faintly in the quote I posted but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

@BretVDB I just want to hear the argument from the literary sorts as to whether the Cappadocians and all the important eastern patristics except the Alexandrians were correct to reject the canonicity of the book of Revelation

The Magistrate, which exists for the sake of the common good, will, one can hope, one day wise up to the Jewish Question and begin mandating that Jews identify themselves with badges and remove themselves from public office and positions of influence, in line with traditional Catholic principles. It's quite feasible for a modern state to do. The Third Reich, despite its excesses, demonstrated this admirably.

You may think this absurd favoritism for the interests of a certain ethnic group is a construct of modernity but this is actually a 2 millennium long church tradition

This seems necessary to say- Its ok to whine about it being unseemly to call 180+ pages an “encyclical”. I sympathize there. Super weird. But it seems much LESS ok to suggest- as many Catholics currently are- that catholics themselves arent duly obligated to read their own pontiff’s encyclical. thats literally just ignoring and possibly rejecting your own Church’s magisterial teaching. Full stop. Anyway, I dont feel bad about saying that because I’m not even catholic and I’ll still have it read by the end of the week. But like why even bother being a Catholic if you dont care what your magisterium is attempting to teach you? So it seems to me.

@JustinusRomanus By bonafide Catholic soteriological logic: Anything that warrants temporal purgation is purged exponentially more easily in THIS LIFE rather than after death. You are making a strictly illogical choice. Ie: you are SINNING by your own principles, you bastard!

@UntoldFortune Ok, the Pontifex Maximus can add it to my purgatory time. It'd be preferable to actually reading it.

I mean I strongly disagree with the sentiments of the encyclical. I think AI is part of God’s creation itself as a form of sacred art. And it’s no less so for our participation in that creation itself. But I’m still gonna read it, as should every Catholic. One has to to know what their church teaches before they can affirm OR reject it 😂

It was indeed a superb moment. We need to return to the era when kings and bishops would threaten each other MEANINGFULLY on a regular basis. It was the natural order of checks and balances actively willed by God. As St. Paul tells us: rulers do not bear the sword in vain. Every bishop is permitted a good stab at the emperor as long as they’re aware there might be God-willed consequences for failing to rise VICTORIOUS. As an aside, St. Paul’s view does quite obviously exclude unqualified democracy as a legitimate form of human governance. just a quick fyi on that one is all.

Is that what they named his letter to the Duchess of Brabant? That was actually a pretty important read for me, discovering that Thomas didn’t even offer like a PEEP of conscientious objection to Lateran’s very blatant anti semitism. Thats indeed one of a few things that began my path away from Thomism a very long time ago, IIRC.

It's humorous how someone could read a document like Cum Nimis Absurdum by Pope Paul IV or St. Thomas Aquinas' De Regimine Judaeorum, and conclude that the Church 'favors' the Jews, since both documents say that the Jews are condemned to perpetual servitude for their murder of Jesus Christ. Even the Code of Theodosius far earlier forbids Jews from building new synagogues, from repairing them, sentences Jews to death who prevent others of their religion from converting to Christianity, and forbids circumcising non-Jews, intermarrying between Jews and Christians, and all sorts of other things. By the time the Middle Ages came around, Jews were forced to wear badges and were forbidden from most roles in society. It was only Christendom which kept the Jew from dominating Western society. Where the Christian loses power, the Jew gains it.
