In Hokkien, 日本 is pronounced as ji-poon. Many words in Japanese are pronounced similarly to Hokkien, like 世界 (world) - se kai 新闻 (news) - sim boon 简单 (simple) - kan dan So likely the J of Japan is due to the Hokkien pronunciation of 日本 - Ji Poon.
