@JosephKahn And it's west LA so 15-20 bucks a parking space plus more for trucks. Real bummer is you always have to think of how to work with a smaller crew here because of not only their labor cost but that parking, meals, trucks, vans etc. Money off screen.

@UploadTodd I was given a location for free but I have to rent a parking lot at UCLA with all the infrastructure that entails, then have union teamsters take everyone up and down the hill, so even free is expensive.

I'm trying to get some work into LA right now and it's a fucking nightmare. Unions don't negotiate, locations don't negotiate. Non union gigs get flipped. Every extra in SAG tries to upgrade to OCP so I have to write them out. Need to hire a gazillion cops. The cost of everything is nuts. There's just so much I can do before I have to take this shit to Thailand. If everyone can't be bothered, neither can I.

The opening Steadicam sequence of BOOGIE NIGHTS [1997] is one of my favorites, and it's well-known for good reason. The shot was operated by Andy Shuttleworth and runs just under three minutes, beginning on a crane, moving through Dutch rolls and tilts down to street level, then entering the club and tracking the action continuously. In one shot across three minutes, Anderson introduces the major players, the environment, the era, important character hierarchies, and even foreshadowing about the relationship between protagonist and antagonist — eight characters in total. The Steadicam submerges itself between extras, requiring extraordinary precision and planning. This was filmed in 1996–97, long before drones existed, so the smoothness of the transition from crane to handheld is a purely mechanical achievement. Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the movie and storyboarded the shots at age 25, and shot the movie at age 26.
