🇪🇺 Europa League - Matchday 8 Permutations & Match Dynamics. • Aston Villa v Salzburg: Aston Villa have qualified automatically and sit second in the competition, with squad rotation expected. Salzburg must win to have any chance of staying in the competition. • Basel v Viktoria Plzen : Plzen have already qualified for Play-offs within 9th-24th rankings and cannot finished top 8. Basel must win to have any chance of finishing top 24 & escaping elimination. • Celtic v Utrecht: Celtic must win to qualify for play-offs, whilst Utrecht are eliminated. • Crvena Zverzda v Celta Vigo: Both within the 9th-24th rankings & have qualified for Play-Offs but highly unlikely to finish in top 8 due to poor GD. • Porto v Rangers: Porto MUST win for any chance of top 8 finish, incredible record so far this season at home vs a Rangers side who are eliminated from the competition with focus on domestic campaign. • FCSB V Fenerbache: Fenerbache stuck mid-table with no threat of elimination nor top 8 finish. FCSB MUST win and results to go their way of any chance of progression (highly unlikely). • Genk v Malmo: Genk MUST win to have any chance of potential top 8 finish, Malmo are eliminated and still in the off season. • GO Ahead Eagles v Braga. Braga sit 5th and likely to finish top 8 due to healthy GD, whilst Go Ahead Eagles need a big win and scoreline to significantly improve their disastrous (-8) goal difference, highly unlikely. • Lille v Freiburg: Freiburg sit 3rd whilst Lille sit 21st (although with a positive GD which is hugely influential with teams in and around their on negative GD). Low intensity game-state. • Ludogorets v Nice: Ludogorets head into this match knowing if they are to win, they’ll likely qualify but if they are to draw they’ll need Celtic drop points in their important match v Utrecht who are already eliminated. So high intensity from the start. Nice are eliminated and Concede HIGH amount of shots. • Lyon v PAOK: Lyon sit top of the table with PAOK needing a win to have any chance of top 8 finish although highly unlikely due to being 13th in the standings and teams above on more points. • Maccabi Tel Aviv v Bologna: Bologna MUST win to have any chance of a Top 8 finish. Maccabi are eliminated, registering just 1 point from 7 matches. Game to be played at a neutral ground in Montenegro. • Midtjylland v Dinamo Zagreb: Both teams likely to maintain their position in the league table with Midtjylland Top 8 & Dinamo needing to avoid defeat for top 24 finish. • Nottm Forest v Ferencvaros: Nottm Forest sit mid-table already knowing their fate in the competition with a play-off game next (perhaps one eye on PL game at the weekend?) Ferencvaros sit 7th and still unbeaten in this competition but only just within top 8. Important fixture for away side. • Panathinaikos v Roma: Panathinaikos have secured a top 24 finish but cannot finish top 8. Roma currently sit sixth and have one of the best GD's in the competition, a point should be enough for a top 8 finish. • Real Betis v Feyenoord: Both teams needs win for different reasons here, Betis to maintain top 8 finish whilst Feyenoord know they need to win to have any chance of staying in this competition. Goals to be expected here - two sides that produce a high xG. • Sturm Graz v SK Brann: Sturm are eliminated from the competition, an important game for Brann as they are currently JUST inside the top 24 standings, a point should be enough for the away side. • Stuttgart v Young Boys: Important game for both teams here as Stuttgart Must win to have any chance of top 8 finish whilst Young Boys are currently 23rd & fighting to survive. My Issue with VAR, which could have flipped so many previous decisions. We spend 3 minutes drawing lines to differentiate millimetres between the goal scorer & defenders when there’s no way that’s the correct point of contact from GORDON’S CROSS. He’s barely started his follow through! Even if they get it right there’s still a frame issue from the footage too with the ball often blurred at impact point. Implementing a margin of allowance on the line drawn between the Goalscorer & Defender is the only resolve imo.
