My @UppsalaBooks collection grows by two! Most of the Walther book are texts I have never read before, and Die Minneburg I had never even heard of before! So excited to get into these.

@UppsalaBooks This story is mentioned in the two Old English fragments "Waldere" (dated about AD 1000), the Latin epic poem Waltharius (early 10th century), fragments of a Bavarian poem (early 13th century) and two episodes in the Norwegian Þiðreks saga.

@UppsalaBooks Finally - not kidding - a translation of Walther. I can manage Old English and Latin, but German is belong my capability.

@Andrewnsnyder I read Beowulf a year or two ago based on your recommendation of the new Beowulf translation by Shippey! It is now one of my favorite books. Everything from the plot, style, and themes were very fantastic, and it was even personally impactful. Thank you!

This anthology offers parallel texts and translations of the poetry that survives in Old High German, the earliest stage of the German language, from roughly 800 to about 1050. The translations keep as close to the originals as possible, while giving at the same time some indication of the poetic form. The works included range from heroic lays to charms and blessings to historical poetry and hagiography. There is the heroic song of the battle between Hildebrand and his son, a charm featuring major pagan deities (Wodan, Balder, Frigg), poetic presentations of the creation and judgement day, a poem about a victory over the Vikings, and much more. Selections from the massive Gospel-poem by Otfried, the first named German poet, are offered. An appendix featuring Old Saxon analogues is also included. Visit: uppsalabooks.com/ohg

In to-day's post, this book (recommended by a follower), which should be a useful warm-up to discussing Boswell's Life of Johnson on @CritReadings in the future!
