Players and coaches should show love for someone struggling with substance abuse. However, and I mean a BIG however. Suggesting a gentle warning for a DUI is ludicrous. He’s lucky no one was hurt or worse. You can show love and accept consequences at the same time

Sad to see all the Utes wanting the most severe punishment for a son of their own star player who has been through some hard things. To all you future player recruits out there, this is what Ute loyalty looks like. 25 years from now, they’ll burn your kids at the stake if they ever mess up.

I've seen a lot of people commenting on the charges involving BYU football player Ephraim Asiata. The legal process should play out. Driving under the influence is serious. It puts lives at risk, and choices have consequences. ACCOUNTABILITY matters. But so do grace, forgiveness, and recovery. Many people know Ephraim as a football player. Fewer know the road that brought him here. As a teenager, he survived a shooting that took the lives of two of his cousins. He nearly lost his own life. He endured countless surgeries, fought through rehabilitation, and at one point doctors weren't sure he would ever play football again. BYU's Deep Blue shared his remarkable story. And I failed to mention why i posted the video earlier today.. It showed a young man who refused to quit after enduring unimaginable tragedy. His dream wasn't just to play college football. After surviving a shooting and learning to walk again, his dream continues to make it to the NFL. If his prior injuries have possibly derailed that, he may be struggling with possibility of not making a big enough impact in college to merit that opportunity in the NFL.. As we've seen.. Even after arriving at BYU, his adversity hasn't ended. He's battled injuries, struggled to regain his weight and strength, and fought to earn playing time. The transition to college football has been anything but easy. His journey has continued to test him physically, mentally, and emotionally. Life is rarely black and white. We don't know everything someone is carrying or battling behind the scenes. That doesn't excuse poor decisions, and trauma doesn't remove responsibility. Accountability is still required. But we can acknowledge that healing is often a lifelong process. I've watched alcoholism and addiction devastate families. My brother-in-law, Jake Shoff, founded Phoenix Recovery Center. Today, my sister, Emily Shoff, helps lead that mission. I've seen firsthand that recovery is possible when people are willing to accept help, be honest, and do the hard work of change. It's imperative to "Rise Above".. If Ephraim is struggling, I hope he gets that help. I hope he takes full responsibility for his actions, learns from them, makes things right where he can, and chooses recovery over self-destruction. One mistake, no matter how serious, doesn't have to be the final chapter of someone's story. I hope this becomes another chapter in Ephraim's story of overcoming adversity, not the ending. Support accountability. Believe in redemption. Those ideas don't compete with one another. I'm sorry if anyone was offended by me not giving context.
