I’ve always taken a clear stand against social media abuse, whether it’s targeted at celebrities, politicians, or anyone in the public eye. What has happened to @Chinmayi is wrong! No one deserves to be attacked in such a vile manner. That said, I’ve been meaning to speak honestly on the broader issue here. I believe women deserve equal opportunity, dignity, respect, and security….just as men do. At the same time, I’m also a man shaped by the same society. I know how easy it is to fall into old patterns and to participate…sometimes knowingly, sometimes not. There have been moments I’ve caught myself and felt guilt. And moments I haven’t. Still, I’m trying to gradually unlearn what male privilege has handed me in this male-dominant society. But to those who are taking forward this idea, I say this with respect: your cause is righteous. But it’s also delicate. Do remember, you’re not revolting against a dictator or a government. You’re challenging the worldview of your neighbor, your friend, your brother. If your tone becomes provocative, if you speak in a way that provokes more hate, or if you respond to hate with even more hate, you risk damaging a lot. Your cause might lose the very people it hopes to awaken. And I’m not saying you should stay silent. Not at all. I’m asking you to be strategic. Be persuasive. Yes, that might offer little comfort to those who’ve suffered hate, inequality, or abuse. But still, the injustice of it doesn’t change the fact that any political or social change, especially in systems built on the consent of the majority requires even the strongest leaders or revolutionaries to trim at times. Now, coming back to Chinmayi.. her activism is selective. It appears she chooses to speak up only when the accused fall on one end of the ideological spectrum. Even within her own industry, her criticism seems to vary depending on the stature of those being accused. Feminism or any advocacy rooted in justice. can’t afford to be selective. It must be consistent, or it risks appearing performative. And when people disagree with your views but do so constructively, it’s perfectly valid to engage in dialogue. But if someone is being outright abusive, responding only fuels the fire. I would instead urge her to explore legal options. Because online abuse is not exclusive to women. While it is often far more vile and targeted when directed at women, online abuse affects everyone.
