As the daughter of a Marine Corps and Vietnam Veteran, Shelley Eitel became familiar with Houston VA at a young age. When her father developed cataracts and couldn’t drive to eye exams due to dilation, Eitel often drove him at the age of 17. The excellence of Houston VA left a lasting impression on Eitel. “Seeing his vision restored at the VA at such a young age filled me with tremendous gratitude and inspired me to care for our Nation’s heroes,” she said. Eitel went on to earn a bachelor’s in psychology and nutrition from the University of Houston and a master’s in nutrition from Texas Women’s University. Hoping to embark on a VA career, Eitel completed the dietetics internship program at Houston VA and then in 2008, she was hired to serve as the outpatient and home-based primary care dietitian at the Beaumont VA Clinic. “I always knew I wanted to work in healthcare,” said Eitel. “I became a dietitian because I enjoy teaching and educating, and nutrition allows me to do both.” In 2013, Eitel transferred back to Houston to serve as a dietitian with primary care, and then in 2021, she joined the newly established heart transplant program in 2021 as a Heart Transplant/Heart Failure Dietician. Eitel helps Veterans improve their diabetes management before and after transplant and supports them in reaching their target weight for successful heart transplantation. She enjoys working with Veterans with heart failure as they improve their quality of life through lifestyle changes, medical management, and advanced interventions. “There is nothing like seeing a Veteran experience relief from chronic symptoms of heart failure,” said Eitel. “I truly feel at home within the VA and enjoy coming to work every single day.” (Photo: Shelley Eitel (left), Houston VA Heart Transplant/Heart Failure Dietician, meets with Navy Veteran Jarvis Russell at the Michael E.
