Meet Bob! Bob Gebhard is a Navy Veteran who didn’t just serve his country decades ago…he’s still showing up for his fellow Veterans today. Bob stopped by the Houston VA today with arms full of games (bingo sets, Connect Four, playing cards and more!) and something you can’t put in a box: genuine, heartfelt cheer. He dropped it all off for Veterans living in our Community Living Center, bringing smiles, friendly competition, and a reminder that they are not forgotten. Bob served in Vietnam back in the 1960s and stays busy these days giving back through the Houston Veterans Rotary Club, Veteran Food Pantry Distributions and countless other community and Veteran organizations. But today….he made it personal. Thank you Bob for your service then, and your incredible generosity now! #HoustonVA #VAVolunteer #MichaelEDeBakeyVA #CDCE

Last night we honored those who gave the last full measure of devotion. When the 24 notes of Taps sounded, we were reminded that the freedoms we cherish were delivered by those who sacrificed everything. On Memorial Day, and every day, we must not forget what we have been given by these heroes.

Seven years ago, Army Veteran Rocky Fernandez’s life changed in an instant when a car accident left him paralyzed. What followed were years of grueling challenges, including multiple long hospital stays, a serious infection, and the daily reality of living with limited mobility. But this spring, Rocky rolled across the finish line in the best way possible: he graduated with a degree in petroleum engineering from Houston City College. “I’m not gonna lie; it was hard to have faith after all these setbacks,” Fernandez said. “But I learned to take my time and just get it done." Lucas Fisher, a Marine Corps Veteran from Willis, Texas, has become a familiar and beloved face at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, where he volunteers a couple of times a week to play guitar bedside for his fellow Veterans. “I love watching their faces,” Fisher said. “You can see them go somewhere else for a moment; somewhere happy. That’s everything.” va.gov/houston-health… #houstonVA

VA hospitals earn record-high quality ratings in 2026 CMS report. The Department of Veterans Affairs today announced that 78% of VA hospitals that received an Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating earned four or five stars in the latest annual report from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. That’s the highest percentage since CMS first started rating VA facilities in 2023. Additionally, VA accounted for nearly 15% of all 5-star rated hospitals in the 2026 report. The new report marks the fourth consecutive year that VA facilities have outperformed non-VA facilities, and it’s the second year in a row that no VA hospital received a one-star rating. news.va.gov/press-room/va-…
