Today is the feast day of our Patron Saint, St Cuthbert. Durham Cathedral exists as the final resting place of one of the North’s greatest saints: the man who lived a humble and prayerful life and who inspired many to follow in the footsteps of Christ.

Celebrate County Durham Day this Friday (20 March)! We’ve planned a range of family-friendly activities to showcase the county’s heritage, history and community spirit. Our libraries will host engaging activities, with colourful displays of local history books, works by Durham authors, and stories inspired by our landscapes. Look out for blue and yellow displays reflecting the county flag. Children can join LEGO club challenges at participating libraries, creating blue-and-yellow builds that celebrate what makes our county unique. @DurhamLibraries social media will be sharing photos of displays and LEGO creations throughout the day. Blaze the Book Dragon and his friend Rory from @TheStoryDurham will also be exploring the county. Iconic sites including Durham Town Hall and The Story will be lit up in blue and yellow. The Story is offering free spotlight tours, plus two special history sessions: • Friday, 2pm: Battle of Britain in the North tour • Saturday, 11am: Short talk on the Bradford family and their role in the Durham Light Infantry Leader Cllr Andrew Husband said: “County Durham Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our beautiful county. We want to showcase our local pride, heritage, creativity and community spirit by bringing residents together for a vibrant programme of activities. “No matter your age, we have something for everyone at our venues this Friday. Whether you want to find out more about the county’s history, try your hand at creating your own blue and yellow LEGO cathedral, or enjoy a brilliant book inspired by our stunning landscape and its people, we can’t wait to share County Durham Day with you and highlight all that our county offers.” Find out more: durham.gov.uk/countydurhamday
